I have a brilliant navigation software package on my laptop and before my young friends came cruising with me it used to link with Claymore's GPS.
My young friends buggered-up (technical term) my GPS unit as they wanted to try out their handheld with the NMEA cable which did work very well.
Needing to be trendy and keep up with my young friends I've bought a Garmin 76 which is really good along with the power cable and an nmea cable.
SO
Do I need to learn how to input waypoints into it or should I just stick with the routes and waypoints I've loaded into the software on the laptop.

The less kind members will no doubt insist I need to learn how to use the new gizmo but really I cannot see why - am I missing something?

Lot easier to put the waypoints in from the pc, but there are times when you have to do it manually. Can you not get said young friend to do it for you?

Think I'd learn how to do it in case the laptop goes tits up. Good idea to have some key waypoints stored in aforesaid GPS JIC .. erm and I'd have a spare GPS JIC ..

Gps is no fun: a short while ago i was out with a solenty friend, and although we had no detailed chart of one particular area i did have the handheld GPS chartplotter ready to go with plenty of waypoints. But it seemed much more fun to drive around looking for the Princessa buoy, worry about going aground and so forth. Eventually, a large cross-channel ferry came up the shoreside beam, and convinced us that perhaps we might be a bit too worried, but no matter...

Dear Old Timer nee Claymore.
If I (the original non teccie) can manage to enter data into a 76 then I'm sure that you can. It's a bit boring to do but may help you out of a mess sometime. Go on, go on ,go on, you can ,you can, you can.

P.S. The 76 is an excellent bit of kit - good choice.

Yeah - I use a 76.....excellent and actually one of the better ones (IMHO) to put waypoints into.....tried a few before I chose the 76.

Might be a good idea to learn to do it, in case a "big 'un" ever bypasses the washboards and soaks the laptop!

The 76 is a great GPS- if you put enough sensible waypoints into it, the screen is big enough to give you a very fair idea of where you are in relation to everything( no jokes about using eyes, charts etc) ie bit like a chartplotter but you have to use your imagination for the land. Try running it on battery saver mode if you don't have the 12 volt cable- lasts a lot longer. Also, if you have the enema cable, try going to Garmin on line for software updates.

harrumph ... you mean its goodbye to the mail order sextant which came in a brown paper bag and which you, youse shortsighted auld goat !!, discovered was a sex-tent for active campers and is now an extension to the patio and which we thought tasteless and a victory of enthusiasm, hope and expectation over reality ......

I'm sure it was no lack of agility which caused you to misname the Master Mariner who responded to your request for advice. No one north of the Kyles would call Captain McFarlane - Para - his name being Peter or Para Handy. It is always the same with you enchineers and folk who put their faith in machinery - you have no consuderation for the feelings of one of Brutain's hardy sons.
