Can i just confirm that your fine filter is the type which consists of a metal pot with a replaceable paper element?

And you dry the upper lid part and grease the ring b4 inserting it in to a grove in the lid?? I found that the rubber seal had to be stretched a touch to fit in the groove and kept poping out.

I need to take a mirror to see what i am doing!!!

Yes, thats right but don't use too much grease.
If you take a mirror, best if you can get a big one - SWMBO's hand-bag make-up mirror is a touch on the small size and they're not too happy with the dirty finger marks.
I must admit to being a bit of a scrooge and re-used the old ring and filter as it was very clean and looked quite new. I didn't need to stretch the ring although with a new one you might have to. Never had a problem on car oil filters so assumed that the ring was supplied the correct size.
