The Swellies is a good training ground for Strangford..............If you get the tide wrong going in it's a little like the "Big One" at Blackpool. That said it is superb once inside. It's the only place I have seen Killer Whales, we were very excited........... the seals weren't too happy! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Been through Strangford narrows underwater, yep we dived it. Scary /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif we were bloody terrified, reel of line jammed in a birdsnest at 40m which was just as well because we were on our way down to 60. We just clung to each other eyes wide open in terror as we were swept along the huge underwater wall. Huge rocks stuck out and we expected to be impelled at any moment only to be saved at the last nano second as the water rushed round the rocks. After 20 minutes the world stopped and we slowly surfaced in the middle of the lough grateful to see the rib following us. Strange things you do when your younger. Now I would be quite happy to sail in and tie up for a quiet pint.

Thanks everyone for turning my pics into a very entertaining thread. Just lurve that LW springs pic of the Swellies Kwak. NOW I understand why it is not recommended for sailly boat trips then.

Diving Stangford? I have heard that peeps have "drift" dived the Swellies too. The other really bad one I have heard of is Langness point, Castletown. Mad doesn't define such trips, but suicidal might. Apex over tip in 5-7kts of turbulent water & bu@@er all visibility. More like kite flying in a tornado.

Rushy thanks for the Piccies and for starting a good thread.
It's been a good giggle!
I thought the low water swellie shot would give peeps a good idea which way not to go!
The sticky out bit on the left opposite the South Cardinal on swellie rock (to the left) South, is what is called "Prices Point". Lot's of peeps get caught out by that bit and stay too close to the Mainland side , so keep a good "offing" there even at half tide.
K
