I require various seals for my Perkins 4.108. At this time it is just the rocker cover and a couple of flange joints on the fresh water system.
I have had some difficulty locating a stockist for these items so question 1 is a plea for a good contact.
Question 2 is that given the difficulty in sourcing these bits and pieces is it possible just to use some sort of gasket goo.
As an alternative is it possible to buy sheets of gasket material (where from?) and cut your own?
What is the purpose of the very thin paper gaskets that are used? is this just to aid seperation of the parts.
I couldnt find any posts on this and with so many older engines around and the need for us all to be able to do a bit of DIY (sometimes in remote places) it would be nice to get some advice from you practical experts on this subject generally.
I believe that I could get a comprehensive kit for the Perkins but sods law states that I have some mods not covered by the kit and once you have used a couple of items you no longer have a kit!

Gasket paper is normally available from Brown Brothers, car parts type places or engineering supplies type gaffs! The thin paper gasket on a jabsco/johnson pump, is a spacer and a seal, it needs to be the right thickness to give the correct clearance,/pressure on the impellor, it is often the case with oilpupms etc. Gasket goo will not do in these circumstances and is at best, to be avoided alltogether, apart from maybe some non setting hylomar, thinly smeared on the gaskets. IMHO

Not wishing to teach you suck eggs but the following may be use to you

The ancient art of paper gasket manufacture.

Take some gasket paper (actually almost anything will do) and cut it so it covers the flange or mating surface.

Stick it on the mating surface with a thin smear of grease - any grease will do - or thick oil for that matter. Just so it stays put.

Tap around the mating surface with a ball pene hammer, using the flat side and the ball side where required to cut the paper to exactly match the mating surface.

You will never buy a another paper gasket again.

Cylinder head gaskets are more of a problem they are made from aluminum, copper and asbestos - covered in glue or varnish making these is difficult, they must be the correct thickness or you can get compression problems or valves hitting the opistons if there is insufficient head room.

Rocker cover gaskets were made from cork (when your engine was born) but now thick buyl rubber is often used. These are hard to make but that should be unnessecary the rubber ones are hard to destroy.

Hope this helps

David
