Is PeTa a poor knockoff of PeLa, then?

My Pela sucker has been fine for the five years I've had it, used to pump engine oil, diesel, and occasionally bilge water (the bits in the bilge water blocked the narrow dipstick tube but that's not the tool's fault).

I have used the same Pela for about 7 years now.I replaced the see through tube bit with some flexible tube from the chandlers.Cost me a couple of quid.You are right the original tube gets brittle.

Buy the flexi tube from a pet-shop; the sort used in aquariums cos it's cheaper!

I have a Pela, excellent bit of kit. Not used for oil as I have a Beta with a fitted hand pump - used for getting water out of an innaccessible bilge area under the (full) fuel tank, I didn't fancy emptying the tank, just had to drill a couple of holes in the ply supporting the tank. From local chandlery which was cheaper than online.

but if you start adding bits of tube to the existing make sure you cannot lose it down the dipstick hole/tube into the sump. It happens!

I've no idea if this is restricted to some areas only but it looks as though it might be a worthwhile gadget for boat (and garden tools etc)

I bought one of these pumps and used it for the first time yesterday, I didn't time it with a stopwatch but it emptied just over 0.5L of cold 10/W40 oil from my gearbox in about 30 secs, I'm quite pleased with it.

I got one as well, very pleased, with a little thought it was clean and quick to use. Probably the least messy oil change I have ever done!

This is the custom high-volume five-zone oil change system I installed on my boat.

It sucks eight quarts from the engine sump in ten seconds. I just stick the drain hose into a five gallon container for a five minute oil change cycle.

Oil-change pumps are fairly standard equipment on mobos.

I almost installed one on Ariam, the engine had the fitting for it, but I settled for a hose plumbed to a convenient point that a Pela sucker can be plugged into. It drains quicker without the constriction of the thin black dipstick tube.

I might revisit that, actually, as it's a bit of a faff to empty and clean out the Pela before re-stowing it.

Used mine to pump bilge wate,r and when oil-change time came, I found that the metal reinforcement in the tube had rusted, causing leaks. Had to order replacement tube online, delaying oil-change by a week. Perhaps this electric pump might be suitable for getting bilge water out from double skinned sections, as it seems to have tubes made of plastic only.

The converse is that the tubes provided with one well known brand do not appear to be totally resistant to oil/diesel and get brittle over time - requiring replacement

Have just borrowed one of these.
It removed 12 litres of hot oil from my engine in about 5 mins or so.
Excellent bit of kit.

What a faff to poke a thin pipe down the dip stick hole and use a big "sucker" to get the oil out of the sump.

I changed the drain plug with a banjo fitting in the engine drain plug and the gearbox drain plugs feed to a change over valve then to an hand engine out pump from ASPS.

Top of the pump can be seen in the pic between the oil pressure gauge and the wiper motor engine stop control.

When I am changing oil I just use the plastic oil containers from the previous change under the spout and just dispose of the fill can to the oil reclaim man in the marina

BTW the best pump for diesel oil transfer / polishing is either a gear pump or metal vane pumps. Jabsco do both and there are others from places like machine mart or even Amazon and E bay

+1. My Lancing Ford has a hydraulic fitting and reasonable bore pipe to a manual double acting bronze pump. Easy Peasy

My small Beta engine came with the oil extractor pump plumbed in; OK, it's manual, but very convenient - if hardly "really posh" .

That's one of the reasons I bought a Beta - the oil drain pump is standard unlike other similar new engines. Makes oil changing MUCH easier as I do it afloat after running the engine so nice and warm and easy to pump.
