I am seriously thinking of purchasing a Mobo with twin 4 stroke outboards . Before commiting is it possible to have the engines oil analysed?

As part of my engine service Berthon send samples to a lab called Robertson Labs (I think). I had some results a few days ago actually, but the lab reports are on the boat and I'm not so I wouldn't swear to the name. I would have thought it pretty important to get an oil analysis before you spend a few £k on engines which might be shot.

That was the sort of report I was thinking of. In fact it may have been the same company. I particularly like the normal/caution/serious categorisation which lent some meaning to the figures for a non-chemist like me

Yes, but what are you checking it for?

There is a strage misconception regarding value of snapshot oil samples.

On high utilisation engines oil regular sampling is a valuble tool. Often the outcome of a 'one shot wonder' can be inconclusive. Raises loads of questions and few answers. Outcome boat sales fall through.

Add to that , a good friend of mine and excellent mechanic swears by using a litre of road diesel in the engine oil before an oil change, its the best engine oil flush available.
Apparently the detergents used designed for a cleaner diesel emissions are also perfect for flushing engine deposits away, once the oil/diesel is drained the new oil will stay golden fresh looking for another 30 hours.

But I would expect an oil sample to show a trace of diesel contamination in his well maintained engines .
