oil pressure problem

Thanks for the replies. Now that it is daylight, I am able to see the situation better. In the dark, and using just a torch, I could not see the whole picture. This morning I went back up to the boat and noticed that I did not lose my oil as I first thought. I checked several times and I had almost 3/4 on the stick. That's good. But why did I lose oil pressure? I removed the sender and attached a manual gauge and ran the engine for a few seconds, but no indication of oil pressure. (the gauge had a long, clear tube between the fitting and the gauge, so I hope running it only a few seconds was long enough). I removed the flywheel and took the oil pump off. That seemed to be o.k.. So now my thoughts are a problem somewhere between the pump and the crankcase. Could it be a loose pickkup tube? Any thoughts?
Many thanks ----

Have you had any oil pressure?

Some engines are reluctant to prime if unused for any length of time, you may also
have an air leak on the intake side of the pump. This could be loose clearances in the pump, or a leak in the actual pick up pipe. Try jamming a piece of plastic tub in the pick up side and sucking to see if it finds any oil, if it does then pack the pump with Vaseline reassemble it and try again. Priming the pump like this is very often enough to get enough suck. If you still have no pressure then DON'T run it very long.
