Not sure what I’ve done , recently purchased a boat with Mercury 75 2 stroke . The instrument cluster was all working fine but the wiring was very untidy , a fuse was blowing in the engine as well and I was told it might have been an auxiliary circuit which was doing that .After tidying wiring up fuel gauge not working , Am I correct in Saying that there should be a supply to gauge and the cable to sender is a variable earth so to speak ? I put a meter to gauge with ignition on and didn’t get any voltage so was wondering where the power comes from ,is it from engine loom or from ignition switch , also the cut off switch not operating, any ideas . Many thanks

Yes that is how the gauge works, the power comes from the ignition switch and the purple wire is the power supply to all gauges, there should be a black earth wire on the gauge also. They are marked + - and S on the gauge, S going to the tank sender. By cut off I assume you mean dead man switch, this has two black with yellow stripe wires which go from the B/Y on the ignition switch up to the dead man switch then back into the same colour wire on the harness going to the engine.

That’s great I will have check supply from ignition , now know how that cut off works it all seems to do with the ignition switch , Thanks again for your speedy response and advice , 👍
