Hi guys,

I'm just coming up to my first oil change on my new boats engine. Its a VP 2002. What grade of oil do I need? I've only run outboards before so am alittle green at this!

Thanks

J

MINRAL oil. Not synthetic or semi-synthetic. This is one case where "less is more". Synthetic and semi-synthetic oils are for high speed high temperature diesels. look for the "CF" on the label.

Good advise topcat, too high a quality you will love the engine to death, literally.

I use a basic Shell diesel mineral oil about 15 quid.

As a tip, get the engine warm first, the oil is thinner and is easier to pump out.

Confused here - how will too high a quality oil 'love an engine to death' ?

What will go wrong in a boat diesel if you use a synthetic oil?

SOme of the more "simple" marine diesels are very old basic designs and the opinion of some here is that you will get little benefit from using synthetic oils. Personally I'm not sure I agree with that because there are things that Synths do much better anyway, like holding combustion by products etc.

A marine engine engineer, someone who makes a living repairing broken engines, told me that the likes of the majority of marine engines are marinised dumper truck engines, in fact the other day n a construction site I saw a machine with YANMAR written on the back, they are designed to burn a little oil, to be run flat out all day and given very little attention.

He also told me he sees more engines in for repair with glazed bores (that'll be the ones smokin like an old train and poor starting as a result of low compression) where the owner has warmed the engine up on their berth, run it at low revs using the very best oil money can buy. The owners of the engine then curse and claim the engines to be rubbish (see any post on the forum where peeps claim VP2000 series to be crap).

He told me this when I tried to buy top quality oil from him, he convinced me 7 years ago to stick with the low grade stuff.
