What is considered to be the best oil for the aforementioned donkey. Shall be down to the boat to perform oil and filter change and with such choice was wondering which brand of oil I should use?

SAE 10W/20 brand relatively unimportant - any reputable brand of oil for ordinary Diesel engines - not fancy stuff for high performance turbos.

In halfords today and noticed synthetics and part synthetics, diesel oil and good old Castrol GTX. So would I be right in any brand just ensure tht it is a 10/20?

According to the manual the oil should be 15W/40 to API spec CD (A spec for diesel engine oils)
You might find you have to opt for 10W40 and the CD spec is now obsolete. The minimum spec for diesel engine oil is now CF which will do just fine. There will be no need to go to a higher spec.
Castrol GTX Diesel is a 10W/40 oil to API CF Also from Halfords Mobil Super M is a 15W/40 oil to API CF
There are also Halfords own brands which will be suitable.

Costco sell Chevron API SL/CF in 20 litres drums. Last one I bought was about £25 probably more now though.
