My manuals are on the boat, can anyone help me with the type of engine oil for the above engine. I have found a tech page that says 10.6ltrs does that also sound about right?

Thanks

You can down load an owners manual from
http://www.volvopenta.com/volvopent...lication_search/pages/publication_search.aspx
Save it and you will always have the answers to your queries to hand

But enter the engine type number correctly as D2-55

I just put in 10 litres of new oil into my D2-55 having changed the oil filter as well. Pumped out old oil until pumping air, and fill level is way too high. OK I though, run the engine to fill the filter then check again, still way too high and very clean indicating that there was little residual oil after pumping out.

I have a distant memory of this from previous seasons but age takes it's toll and now I am faced with pumping out about 2 litres at a guess. Anyone else had a similar experience?

Yes, I have this experience each time. Pumping doesn't get all the oil out - there seems to be a part of the sump where the pipe doesn't reach however much you try, or some kind of pooling elesewhere in the oil cuircuit. I part-fill the filter before replacing it, as you do with a car filter, and then add the new oil in several go's regularly checking the level to avoid overfilling, then obviously again after running the motor.

Welcome to the forum. :)

It's no great deal but it's always worth checking the dates on the postings in a thread as sometimes adding to an old thread is a waste of time depending on the subject under discussion. In this case it doesn't really matter although part filling the filter before replacing is only really possible with a vertically-mounted filter and many of us don't have that option.

Hey, don't agree - I (and others apparently) learn a great deal from old threads...we're all still doing oil changes, improving our boats' electrics, etc. I've recently had to change and bleed (complicated) a Lecomble&Schmitt hydraulic self-steering ram and got much of the necessary info from some 2010/2011 threads. And it's always worth updating them with recent info as someone did to one of my replies on a Landrover forum recently.
In terms of pre-filling the filter - if it's a vertical I'll completely fill it! I was talking about a horizontal..hence only half-filling, which gives you time to get it on quick.
