Does this have to be something special, or will standard car oil do the job?
Maybe a slightly more specific question??
Volvo or Yanmar?
Model number?
ATF or oil?

obviously dont take my advice and then blame mebut...
depends whats already in there, if its red (or a specific type) you cant mix it with another oil without draining, does it still have the sticker on their saying "ATF only" or something to that effect?
truth is you can put engine oil in there just need to make sure your not mixing it, at least that's what a Volvo marine engine mechanic told me.

We are not talking about a Volvo Penta sail drive. Some of those used ATF originally but some years ago VP issued a Service bulletin advising that it be changed from ATF to engine oil. There was infact no objection to engine oil and ATF being mixed in those drives where partial change could be made while afloat!
The recommended oil for the OP's Selva saildrive is an SAE 80W-90, GL5 gear oil. An automotive oil is suitable, typically it will be an oil used in hypoid gear type of back axles.
Respect! Cactus sailing! I don't think I've ever seen such an honest straight forward statement on here before! Good man (or Woman, depending obviously).i had missed the post where op said it was a selva, ignore everything i said you guys are right.
