Oil filter mystery!

I have a 3 year old Volvo Penta D1-20. This year (Mainly because of lockdown), I decided to service the engine myself! I bought a Perkins 861473 oil filter, drained the oil and was already to swap the filter out when I noticed that the filter currently on the engine is about 10mm diameter bigger!
I've double checked with my local marine shop and I am convinced that I have bought the correct filter (which is smaller than the current one on my engine).

Is it possible that the guys which did the last service used a slightly wider oil filter? Can this be done?

Sure, as long as the rubber seal is the same and the thread is the same they could have found a bigger one that fitted.

Don't know about the Volvo but the oil filter for my Yanmar changed size a few years ago. Now much smaller than they used to be but still quite OK.

Would I be correct in thinking that most engines allows for a slightly different size outer seal as long as the inner thread bit is the same?

The sealing gasket has to be the correct diameter for the engine, but the actual diameter of the filter canister can vary (as can the length of the canister).

Ah.. Ok, I see now... So with the larger filter I should see a wider rubber gasket than the smaller one! Cheers

No, the rubber gasket should be the same diameter and width, but the canister itself will be wider.

If its anything like my Perkins engine the part where the rubber gasket tightens up on the engine is wide so will work with with various diameter gaskets.

Often the land the rubber seal fits to is quite broad. So different canisters could fit.
However, on vehicles there can be differences inside the canister. Some have valves to stop back flow when the engine is not running. And some don't.
Always get a filter that is recommended, or is known to work on your particular engine.

The part number 861473 is the Volvo Penta number. You need to check the Perkins part number for the equivalent block. For my 2030D the Perkins filter No. is 140517050, but I think it is different for the 20hp.

Just done a bit of researce the filter140517030 is 10mm narrower than 140517050,I have been fitting the wider one to my engine for years no wonder I struggled to get the filter wrench on.

So, maybe the OP has the filter for the 30hp fitted now, and has bought the correct one ?

Yes it looks that way although we now know that both will fit, the larger diameter one seems to have more equivalents in other makes and thats maybe how I ended up with using it.
