Doing annual maintenance and need to replace certain items. I live miles from Yanmar agents and begrudge paying postage and prices higher than necessary.
Does anyone know the compatible off-the-shelf replacements for
Oil filter
on-engine diesel filter
air filter
generator belt
water pump belt
I have done search and cannot find the answers.
Many thanks.
Paul

I don't believe there are alternatives, and you forgot the water pump impeller which I know must be a Yanmar one. If distance from a supplier is the problem, there must be one who takes on-line orders out there.

Try http://www.asap-supplies.com - they do most bits by mail order using filters like Fram etc., also impellors. Use them the first year, note all the part no's and then use your local car accessory shop in the future. For belts, there is usually a number written on it - then contact your local Bearing Services Ltd. - you'll find them in the yellow pages.

I'd rather be sailing... :-) /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Go to http://www.fleetguard.com/fleet/en/catalog/index.jsp?searchType=APPLU&step=6&#results and find the oil and fuel filter equivalents from the manufacturer "Fleetguard". Then either go to your local car spares shop and ask them to look up the equivalent in the make they stock or telephone Crossland (UK filter company) and ask them for the Crossland equivalent and take those numbers to your car spares shop who will certainly be able to work from the Crossland data if they could not work from the Fleetguard data.

For belts: look at your existing belt and there should be a number such as: "876X9.5" this is the dimention of the belt and again your local car spares shop will be able to provide. If no numbers on the belt, take your existing one to the shop

For oil (engine and gearbox), e-mail your oil spec from the handbook to one of the major oil companies and ask them for the equivalent oil that is available in the UK and available from car spares shop. Make sure you specify you are in the UK (or whichever country you are in) as the same oil is maketed by the same company under different names in some countries.

It will take a bit of doing, but I managed to do it for my Vetus engine.

Just take the bits you want replacing to your local auto factors (NOT HALFORDS) and ask for yanmar or equivalant replacements ... they will probably have yanmar listed in the books as there is a generator set that uses the 2gm under a slightly differant number

WHY PAY THAT MUCH WHEN YOU DONT NEED TO !

Many thanks for all replies. I have done stage 1 Plum and got part numbers for oil and diesel filters so I am off to the motor factors tomorow.

the air filter you wash and re-use, the belts are available from an industrial power belt supplier like fenner power transmissions (they are a different width to thoase in your auto parts shop which will run on the bottom of the pulley and wear very fast). filters can be matched with jap auto spares (at your own risk!).

Hello Paulrossall, did you locate your engine parts from a motor factor? If so, may I recommend you reply with your findings so others will benefit. (My friend's boat has the same engine!) Many thanks.

I have just arrived back from sailing in the MED and must admit I had just about managed to forget what a load of time I wasted looking for cheap parts. I got the Fleetguard information very easily. I then went round two big motor factors and Coopers and Crossland do not have compatible filters listed. I was told Fram might do but did not want to travel to Nottingham (16 miles each way). I thought I had struck lucky at the lorry factors who do stock Fleetguard. They looked up the filters and told me they had never sold any oil filters and had sold 3 fuel filters a few years ago I asked the price and was told £7.47 was the price last time but they might have increased.
I then saw the van from the local marina where I take my boat out and on the side it said Yanmar dealer and I remembered they had very recently been appointed dealers. They had all the items in stock, the fuel filter being £5.90 (cheaper than the Fleetguard), oil filter £6.36, water pump belt £10.38 and Alternator belt £11.08.
I compared the alternator belt with the one I had on which had given off some black bits and was narrower than the official one and confirm the posting above about auto belts is correct. Auto belts are too narrow.
I suspect I could have bought the belts cheaper from Fenner in Nottingham but I spent about 2 hours going round all the factors and you do have to balance savings (if there are any) against time I could be working on my boat.
Thanks for all the help. I am delighted with my Yanmar engine and now even more so that it seems Yanmar are selling the service bits at reasonable prices.
