A mates fishing boat with a ford mermaid 120hp diesel uses nearly a gallon of lube oil per season,it doesn't smoke or leak...where does it go?

Mermaid told me to worry when the oil reaches 2% of fuel consumed. Mine does 2litres between 200 hour changes, probably in smoke at startup and sundry minor leaks. Might be going through an oil cooler.

6 cylinder that's all I know,he spent a fortune having it rebuilt about 2 years ago.

Just wondered as I have a 2712e 90Hp, just under 2500 Hrs, from the mid 70's and use a similar amount of oil.

As Fisherman said......
Check the oil cooler, quite common for them to pass oil into the exhaust. You may even have signs of water in the oil. Oil analysis would pick up any contamination.
