Oil change with Pela

Just changing the oil via the dipstick.How much oil should I expect to get out of an engine that holds 11lts.So far we have only managed 5/6 ltrs and the Pela won't suck anymore out? The oil level was alright before we started.The engines are kamd 42a.

First, dont ram the tube all the way in..seems to me it ends up against something and then restricts the flow. Try part putting the tube in, and when you hear a sucking noise of air, push it in a bit more, and so on.Also, the Pela tube sems very narrow..any bit of muck seems to jam it. Take it out if it isnt working any see if it is actually still working. You should get almost all ofthe oil out (unless there is something odd about the 42)
 
you should get out @ 11 litres. take the black pipe off the Pela and stick in just the clear plastic tube with the larger diameter. Also take off the oil filler cap on the rocker cover as well and it all comes out much easier.

I use a Pela to extract oil the same way as you, through the dipstick tube. It can be a slow process. Did you run the engine to warm the oil first? You should go to about 50c before you start sucking oil out. Is the flexi tube blocked? This has happened to mine regularly, and I use a wire coat hanger to clear the blockage. Is the dipstick showing any oil left in the sump? You could undo the sump plug to see if the is any left in the sump? Be prepared to close it quickly as cleaning oil from the bilge is not the best task.

There is nothing showing on the dipstick. When the oil reaches about 5+ltrs in the Pela all it does is suck air. What are we doing wrong? Also can't push the pipe in anymore if we do it forces the dipstick tube out of the block.

If there is nothing showing on the dipstick, then this would indicate that the sump is empty, unless your engines are at an angle such that the sump is not level?

The engines are at at a slight angle.That might account for some of the problem.I am surprised I have not seen anything on the forum about it before.
 
Measure the length of the dipstick against the tube you are using, it is possible to force the tube in too far and make it turn upwards, this will result in it sucking air.
 
When I do my oil changes, I ALLWAYS do it with a hot engine because the oil is much thinner.. suck out the oil down to just above the minimum mark on the dipstick, then run the engine again to put more heat in and then drain fully....well that how I do it...hope this is of some help..

Provided they are at max level I've never gotten more than around 10.5 ltr's including what's in the filter when doing mine so you should absolutely be able to get more than 5-6 ltrs. Depending on the angle of the engines this might vary a bit, probably no more than 0.5-1 ltr though. There is really no point pushing the plastic tube down the dipstick tube, just suck using the dipstick tube with a suitable sized hose. Its very easy to miss the lowest point with the plastic tube and the dipstick tube is designed for sucking the oil out.
 
We have had more success with a cheap hand pump than the Pela, certainly much quicker. Last boat had a Beta which has a built in pump which was very effective but Volvo haven't adopted the idea. The hotter the oil the better.

I would like to thank all of you that have replied,there has been some good advice as usual.i never knew draining oil could be so involved.Pela's instructions could be a little more helpful considering it cost 60 quid,my son who did the job for me was totally peed of with it.On my old boat I installed brass pumps that drained via the sump plug,Fantastic 10 minute job.All in all I have spent 120 squid on two pieces of kit that has not come up to expectations.The other one was an impeller puller from ASAP that jammed up first time being used and was useless cost 60quid,it's going back.Oh the joys of boating.
 
We bad KAD 42's on our last boat and I could never get the full 10-11 litres out using a Pela. Didn't matter how hard I tried or what I did I only managed about 7 or 8 litrs. I guess the filter holds almost a litre? I put it down to the slight angle of the engines and never came up with a solution.
