I think that I would not like a city if I was given a tour in the back of a police car, like a criminal.
We spent 4 days in Naples and it's true to say that it was mixed with some interest and a splendid night at the opera and attached dinning area. but on the whole even without a particularly unpleasant experience it has little to offer being dirty a sprawling mix with very poor food of which I am sure you could find better than we could with the right direction.LIsten, I'm sorry if your very limited Naples experience was bad, but:
1) spending a day "being shown the city" is just a hair above having never been there, which was my first guess.
2) if you were aware of the misinterpreted EN translation of a saying whose actual meaning is almost the opposite, it would have been fair to avoid quoting it.
Or at least explain its true meaning, which you're still entitled to distort if you think the distorted version is more appropriate, but that's just your opinion, rather than "a very apt old saying".
Well you have to know the reason, which has been explained before and it was very entertaining as were the two policemen that came with it. You certainly get to see places no tourist would normally see and as I explained earlier there was one very good perk. Naples policemen are the most hospitable and friendly that I have encountered in my 73 years.I think that I would not like a city if I was given a tour in the back of a police car, like a criminal.
Now you are making me curious, because the very first of your alternatives is a town that imho just can't hold a candle to Naples. As one would expect there are good museums but I look for more in a city than Naples offered.
I did say surroundings as well but the food and social scene in Vancouver is also excellent. Now you are making me curious, because the very first of your alternatives is a town that imho just can't hold a candle to Naples.
So, I'm wondering what exactly are you looking for in a city, that you found there and not in Naples.
Mind, I lived in Vancouver for a few weeks in a home exchange, and I enjoyed every minute of my stay.
But soulless is the first adjective that springs to mind when thinking of Vancouver.
Exactly the opposite of Naples, whose heart and soul is much more than skin deep, and impossible to appreciate without spending there a significant amount of time, living and going around together with its natives.
So, if aseptic cleanliness is what you look for in a city, well, Vancouver definitely ticks this particular box.
But... What else? Do you prefer rain to sunshine, maybe?
I agree that Vancouver surroundings are nice, though.
But don't get me started on what you can do and see around Naples...
Here's a short list of places I would recommend
Vancouver - lol nowhere as nice
Sydney - a modern City, You could NW and SF at this stage
Perth (Australian one) - lol same as Vancuvr
Florence - are we in a boating forum
Sardinia - its an island not a city
Corsica - again an island
In and or around them all are exceptional places to visit
There are many more.
73 years is a long sentence…what did you do ?Naples policemen are the most hospitable and friendly that I have encountered in my 73 years.
Nothing compared to what I will do when I get my hands around your throat73 years is a long sentence…what did you do ?
I was just making Mapis point about deliberately misinterpreting someone’s statementNothing compared to what I will do when I get my hands around your throat![]()
I'd be very interested to know why, as they've apparently been visiting for years.
Ok, if good food and social scene are crucial parts of what you look for in a city, we are pretty much on the same page.the food and social scene in Vancouver is also excellent.
The fried pizza just about summed up Naples and it's food for me, I hasten to say I didn't try one although several people recommended them.Ok, if good food and social scene are crucial parts of what you look for in a city, we are pretty much on the same page.
But with regard to preferring Vancouver to Naples in this respect, well, that's subjective to a large extent, and of course being fluent in EN or IT (or both) can make a big difference.
So, each to their own - I don't see any other choices than agree to disagree. Veeeeeeery strongly!
Oh, and for the records, this ain't true only of Vancouver from my viewpoint, but also of all the other places in your list, which I know fairly well.
Not to mention that one of them (Sardinia) is where I chose to spend most of my life (living aboard) in the last 15+ years.
In fact, I'm flying back there in 3 days, with no plans to return to mainland Italy before November. So, it's pretty obvious that I like the place.
But if we focus on food and social scene, I'd be hard pressed to argue that Sardinia is superior to Naples.
Apples and oranges spring to mind, but if I should make a sweeping generalization, I'd probably put them just about on par for good food (albeit with huge differences), with Naples a tad above for social scene.
YMMV, of course.
Thank goodness that Fr Hackett didn’t have one when he visited NaplesHMS Trent is currently alongside in Naples. But they got a gun...
