If the cartography is that important to you, keep your admiralty charts updated. Electronic charts post this advice on their products. I.E. If you do not believe what the plotter is telling you do not act on the information.

...One of the reasons I went for ARCS. We have about 180 charts and it costs £60+VAT to update them all every year. Only thing is you need a computer on board and that in itself is both a problem and an advantage. PCs are power hungry, don't like wet environments but they offer onboard wireless communications and weather on the move.

Paper charts are hard to beat...

Yes I got much the same answer from them myself a while ago! bought a Garmin plotter 176c. its a great little plotter but the only problem is that in broad daylight/sunlight I just can't read it at all! have adjusted screen and tried all settings for light and its hopeless! The only place its good for is the arm chair at home when you are learning how to use it!!

Garmin just don't want to know!, they wrote and said that its their practice to upgrade and improve all the time, so buy a new updated one! I only bought it last year! cost five hundred quid plus a further hundred and fifty for the bluechart!

Iv'e always bought Garmin gps, got four now! but I think its the last time, next time I want a plotter it won't be a Garmin!

can you tell me a cartridge based charting for plotters that works differently Barry?

I am also confused about what Garmin don't want to know about - you start with a concern about the readability of a 176c screen and then move onto chart updates.......? I know quite a few people who use the 176c on an open boat and find it excellent so it does sound like a possible problem with your unit - have you compared it to anyone else's?

don't worry about it - as soon as you get the upgrade someone will move the buoys back anyway! Mark the new ones as waypoints and assign appropriate icons and mark the old ones with a cross or similar.
Apart from ARCS charting this is a common issue, and for cartridge based plotters you can't do much about it.

New map from Transas.

Only normally move in very local waters with no long distance bad weather problems likely to be encountered.Glad I did not go for dedicated plotter. My big screen easy to read and simple to operate rather ancient laptop lives inside so weatherproofing etc not a major problem.Needed a new chart and twenty pounds handed over at last years boat show, got me one.
Why are those C map cartridges etc so blimming expensive?

Re: New map from Transas.

because people don't upgrade - a chart's for life! I also suspect they have to pay someone else for the royalties..........
Overall they have come down in price - my Navionics Gold cost me 199 and covers everything from Brest to Calais 'ish - both sides; can't complain about that IMHO.

laptop is a great tool int he right craft - sub 30ft and or open boats and you are really into dedicated plotters.

Oh, darn; I just bought a mint condition 176C on ebay for $375 to upgrade from my 176, which I can see in bright sunlight. Haven't tried the 176C outside yet, but I did notice Jon Bailey peering at his (176C) on the Hamble in May, but I just thought he hadn't figured out how to use the brightness/contrast controls/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Had a 176C for 3 years. It was fine in most conditions, but not when the sun was bright and coming straight towards you over the water. Have recently upgraded to a 276C, which has a much brighter screen, and more colours, so that drying areas show as a much more obvious green.

Barry - I just took my 176C out into the brilliant Florida sunshine and I can see every chart detail with no problem even w/the sun directly on the screen. The viewing angle is fairly critical, but not excessively so.

I've never had a problem with my 176c,( at least until I dropped it off the pontoon 2 weekends ago! into the murky depths, never to be seen again!). In some conditions, you have to turn on the backlight, though Garmin do seem to recognise that in some conditions not as clear as possible, as that is part of recommendations for new 276c.

Brilliant Florida sunshine today? Ivan not making too much impression at the moment then? What is forecast?

Yes, brillian FL sunshine, although at the moment a big dark cloud has appeared and we just had a shower. Forecast is for Ivan to miss us, but it will hit the FL panhandle or somewhere on the N Gulf coast later in the week. Cancelled hotel and now have to put all our stuff back in its place - until the next one.

Hope it stays that way then. We'll have a pint of Guiness at Sibs tomorrow, and a silent moment of two thinking of you. OK, a silent second or two! ;)

Perhaps we could meet at the Ft Lauderdale Boat Show at the end of next month. Can't promise decent beer, however. Hope you had a good day at SIBS.
Ivan will not hit us head on, but we'll get rain and wind on Tues/Wed. Phew!!
