OFFICIAL - The most popular boat names

I saw Buckie Lugger a couple of Summers ago on the west coast - a great name

My own favourite was one called Phanaebos - took me a while and I still assume it was a joke (maybe one only for the Scots)

[/ QUOTE ] I guess it's more popular than "Memento mori" because it's less morbid. But why don't we see (m)any named after the more erotic version "Collige Virgo Rosas"? (There ITU site lists 70 with Virgo in the name.)

If I was starting from scratch, I think I'd call mine "Fag End" after Joshua Slocum's ranch. (His boat's name, Spray, features in 55 names listed by the ITU, whereas no-one seems to have used Fag End.)

I was tempted to call the latest 'Titanic II' just for the crassness and vulgarity of it. Got vetoed by everyone, probably illegal as well, so have gone for the boring 'Moon Dancer'.

There is a riverside restaurant called 'Titanic II' near Ganja in Azerbaijan. Drove past it last weekend.

(cue Ganja jokes)

I always liked "Mafeking" - a mate used it for his canoe as a lad. His mum used to ask why, & the answer was "because it's mafeking canoe" - but she never understood.

Wimmen had a different education in those days! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I liked Shallow Minded for East Coaster's , Dockbuster and Pier Pressure for high sided mobo's and 'See Yawl Later' for South Coasters.

My two favourites are 'Shy Talk' and an old boat I had called Neda Poo. I found it very hard not to laugh when calling up other people on VHF.

Where did "Serendipity" go. We once were in an ancorage in Grenada with 5 of them. We called our boat Be-Bop-A-Lula because we wanted a fun and friendly name, our previous boat having a strange name made up from initials of our family. It worked, no-one forgets it and even the custom guys smile. We often get people going by in their dinghies singing.

Some cracking ones I've seen,

Crime Pays, a rib in Haslar.
Overdraft, Ocean Vill.
Love in a Mist, Heybridge Basin, (Locally known as F*** in the Fog!!)
We have all heard of Don't Panic, on the Hamble!
Wifes Galley, Dover.
She Likes it Rough, Heybridge Basin.

Some great stories behind the names.
