Yippee I managed to navigate the Ofcom site and got a call sign and MMSI. Apparantly my certificate of competance is in the post

Well Done Indeed, You must have a PHD in Computer speak, Spent 2 hours on 2 seperate occasions, and ended uptalking to them, and obviously "you have to stand in a bucket of water facing east", before it works, well thats whatit seemed like to me.

Not the easiest if websites to use as it covers so many things and caters for all classes of user.

Hi Vic, First I have to get the hex number from the HMCG on it's sticky label for the PLB. They say call if nothing is heard after two weeks, call them, so I must do that., click amend licence details, work you way through the pages until you came to the page for radio equipmnet, click on add beacons

I talked to the HMCG before attempting this, as the registration web site requires a yacht and and MMSI number, as if it were an EPIRB. But the whole idea of a Personal Location Beacon is that it's personal. I want to take it from one boat to another. The guy at the registry said no problem, fill the boat's name and MMSI in with the words PLB, "we will know what to do". So I did. No answer back so far.

If you don't have a yacht then you should apply for a Transportable license, suitable for a Handheld and a PLB. (Online and free)
Daft having to register in two places.. Falmouth and Ofcom.. but that's the system!
