Have both lived and worked there on occasions going back to the mid 70s. In fact I actually got my first taste for the sailing life there in 1976 when I was living aboard a friends boat in the old Destroyer Pens.
I worked for LM Shand to build the sea wall across one of the destroyer pens when it was filled in to make a container terminal....happy days!
Was in Gib while Wellington Construction of Florida made such a cock up of building Marina Bay....if memory serves I think they got the boot in the end....
Happy days....!

I was there two weeks ago without any problems. What I have found is you can't book more than a few days in advance.
I’d tried several times in the days preceding my arrival. The problem seems to be at just ‘cos someone’s booked for ‘x’ days, they don’t assume they’ll actually leave at that point and until they physically leave, that berth is blocked. Anchoring off Alcaidesa and calling every day seems to be the best solution.

I would like to moderate my positive comment concerning Marina Bay and Ocean Village. Expecting to spend some days in Gib to do some special maintenance on my engine, I asked politely with my broken english, if a berth would be soon available. The answer looks like if I have asked for a berth in Saint Tropez during the nineties...
I think the friendly and salty atmosphere here is dead. They are more involved in concrete and selling uggly condos. Bye bye, I understand now why Spanish authorities are more prone to close their border...

They can be strange shall we say? I pitched up there in 2018 ish. Was met by Glen? Oh you have to book online before you arrive! I did! No trace here he said as he clacks on his keyboard. I then showed him the email reply confirming ok! He went all huffy but we got a spot.
We eventually went to La Linea, no issues there.
Also tried the other marina, instant huffiness there as well.
Chips on shoulders easily revealed by the slightest mistaken understanding of your words.
Having said that, I love Gib.

Sadly, the hardest part now is getting a berth in Gib’. With the demise of Sheppard’s marina and the loss of berthing in Marina Bay (now ‘Ocean Village) presumably due to the redevelopment and also the space absorbed by the cruise ship/hotel/casino, Gib’ is no longer the cruising crossroads that it used to be. It’s a real shame as for the moment at least, it’s one of the few places where us non EU citizens can stop the Schengen clock. I’ve been lucky enough to get a berth in Gib’ on only one of my last 5 transits through the area.
Until June, we were living in the marina on our motor boat (for the last year and a half), yes it’s a bit noisy when a BA or Easy plane is taking off but that’s only 4 or 5 times a day plus the occasional airforce, so noise is not a serious issue.
As the marina is so close to the runway, it’s a lot easier to get a berth for a motorboat than a sail boat. For some strange reason sailboats, due to tall masts are not allowed to occupy the berths closest to the runway.

loved Gib and wanted to live there permanently, but SWMBO found to too hot so we have had the summer boating back to Jersey.

Gib is not in Schengen
