Hi All

I would like to join the ocean cruising club but I require a sponsor.........anybody out there willing to put me forward.

Leaving July for the Cape Verde's and on.

Thanks

+1

me too :)
Erm, looking for a sponsor (don't know about Cape Verde, possibly later this year).
I could not find a members list so it's difficult to know whom one should ask.

No tattooes, usually shaven, short hair... actually no one a serious club would ever bother with :D

The OCC requires a 1,000nm non stop passage to join, Jane and I qualified with 2,850 in 2004. If you can both can prove you have done that then I'm happy to sponsor you. Or as said find a boat flying the OCC flying fish blue and yellow penant on the port side and ask them.

You can join as an associate member if you haven't done your 1000mile non-stop qualification passage. You still need a proposer. Once you have completed your 1000 miler you will be upgraded to member and allowed to fly the burgee. We did our qualification passage in 2004

Yes, so you or me could propose them, thanks for reminding me that's what we did.

Wowser. Done about thirty of them but I would not be in a club that would have me as a member. ;)

Dear Sundowner 39 and Roberto,

You can find details for OCC membership online here: https://www.oceancruisingclub.org/how-to-join-the-occ.html

If you do not have a proposer please use my name and I will pass your details on to the Chair of the Membership Sub-committee. You'd be very welcome to join as Associate members so that you can tap into the Mentoring Scheme and Port Officer network whilst preparing for your 1,000+nm qualifier, and once qualified I would upgrade your membership to Full.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Kind regards,
Rachelle Turk

I don't think Roberto will have a problem qualifying - see his blog in his signature :)

Great club ... Can thoroughly recommend and willing to propose just drop me a PM ..... Sitting in Mexico right now waiting for a prop shaft (Vallarta) going to cross the Pacific on a members boat heading Galápagos then onto Easter Island then to Puerto Monte in Chile ... All down to that wonderful club .. Met through the OCC

thank you all :)

Rachelle,
on my side I already have a few qualifying passages, all as skipper, most on my own boat: one transat Gambia-Brazil, one Martinique Azores singlehanded, one US East coast to Azores 2.6k miles direct, one passage Azores -Gib and one Azores - Brittany.
I am leaving again in a few weeks: plans are for another transat later this year, and one back to Europe mid 2017.

Not sure what you would consider "proof", we are keeping this blog (thanks Tradewind :) ) it's on its seventh year, sorry it's all in Italian, see entries dated February-March 2011 for the first transat; entries may 2012 for the Martinique Azores, August 2012 Azores-Brittany.
Right now, the small map on the front page left column shows the daily position reports of a delivery US-Gib through the Azores made exactly one year ago (M0ITA my ham callsign), as the system erases data after one year, the plot is slowly disappearing :D

If this is enough proof I can send the application right now, otherwise I'll have to look for marina receipts and similar.

Thanks for your help
Roberto .

Roberto,
More than happy to propose/second you as I've followed your travels off and on via this forum.

Hey, they believed me and my proposer way back in '97 :) so I don't see a problem in this instance.
thank you all :)

Thank you very much for your kind words :)
This time we are attempting Bijagos Islands in Guinea Bissau, then see what places can be approached all along the NE coast of Brazil, then possibly going round Marajo island on the Amazon delta, then the three Guyanas/Suriname. Trinidad if any work is needed on the boat, otherwise Martinique again (cheap flights for the family) and the crossing back to Europe. We'll see how it develops :)

cheers :)

Have you read the book 'A family outing in the Atlantic' by Jill Dickin Schinas (yacht Mollymawk)?
They went to Guinea Bissau back in the 90s - ok times move on but it makes for an interesting read. You can get the book via Amazon I think or perhaps via her website www.yachtmollymawk.com .

Tradewinds,
thanks for the Mollymawk blog, I read a few of their posts and I really like the way they write. I will get their book too. :)
