First got into boating about 5 years ago, as wife's father has one. Do find them good for relieving stress, lucky wife well into them too.

Yes lots of boats never leave marinas, remember first season, boat on next berth, people on everytime we went down, never saw it leave marina.
Helped my wife on delivery with 5 or 6 year old boat had done less than 30 hrs

Re: Are people with big boats unhappy, really? (long)

whoa there
good job i ducked down behind behind the parapet!
I did add the rider that it wasnt true in ALL cases, ie some especially you are happy and use their bigger boats a hell of a lot.

I would dearly love a Mangusta 108 (or even a Leopard), but I can only afford something a (good) bit smaller.

Anyway, whats wrong wiv us Sunfury fans?
LOL

I'm sure that's not a coincidence at all - comes back to my original point about obsession..obsesssion to buy one, then when we have, obsession to always be down there on it!

Re: Are people with big boats unhappy, really? (long)

Real happiness does not come from money but as you suggest I do not think there is an obligation on the wealthy to be miserable!!

Don't want to get too serious here but the greatest pleasure in my life has been watching my three girls grow up into beautiful young women and sharing the experience with my SWMBO. The boat is great but doesn't compare to the smiles and cuddles over the years - money cannot buy it.

Happiness in life is about balance. I could in theory afford a bigger boat but I would be uncomfortable about the cost and this would almost certainly dissipate the extra "buzz" the boat would give me.

Like everyone on here I love my boat and everything associated with it (including this forum). It provides an escape from the day to day routine, but if it became the day to day routine then the special feeling associated with it would become the norm and eventually stop feeling special.

Yes I dream about throwing it all in and going livaboard but in reality what makes the boat special is the fact that it is something different outside the normal daily rat race.

Great thread this, should make MBM nexy month.

Yep..I've been really chuffed with the interest and positive remarks my original posting has generated. And by the way, I agree with your latest post entirely. Regards. Barry.

One of your most perceptive posts ( hell there had to be 1 decent one as you approach a 10,000 total). The only shame is that it wasn't written by John Matthews and and published (in its unedited form) in MBY.

Envy and Aspiration are (unfortunately) inversely proportional. Britain remains one of the few cultures in the World where 'Enjoying one's lot', Begrudging success , Accepting Failure and destroying invention are seen as positive attributes in mankind. No wonder we are shagged.

i have no wish to ass-crawl , but to the follow-up posters who have talked about the 'love of kids growing up' etc... inferring that TCM has his values wrong. Your points are totally irrelevant . TCM was talking about big boats v little boats. No more , no less.

But surely its horses for courses. Seems bit silly having massively big boat if you trundle up and down rivers. Thats not to say that people who have smallish boats they don't want/dream about bigger one. I'd like bigger one but for what I'm doing with the current one, its size is fine. Well ok a bit bigger would be good.
Don't matter what you have as long as you enjoy it.

I have to agree with every single word you have written!

My problem was with the inference and innuendo of earlier posts in this thread. Certain folks consider big boat owners to have 'penile extension' problems. I was suggesting that this was borne of envy fron those peeps and attributing that envy to a lack of personal ambition !! I am aquite prepared to accept that some people are happy that their boat is 'Fit for Purpose'.

I really have to be careful with this theme as my missus has a problem in that she only likes boats with facilities greater than we can afford !! But then again she may just be tactically astute!

Whoever said you have to buy a cruiser which is nicer than your house was on the mark in her case.

ERR Actually I thought I was agreeing with TCM, my post was meant to embellish not contradict his post.

Either you or I missed the point somewhere :)

We are at Brundall Bay whcih is near to Norfolk Yacht Agency. Don't know Hippersons but like the Waveney - we spend quite a bit of time at the Waveny River Centre - kids like it.

Again I agree 100% - the majority of people in UK are hell-bent on negativity and mediocricity - as soon as someone does well, there's a huge campaign to knock him down, or find some kind of negative reason for his success (ie he must be a crook!!). Look for eaxample at what the press tried to do with David Beckham - in my view a superb ambassador for his sport. Anyway, the main point of my initial post was to say how big an obsession our sport/hobby is..not have a crack at those who can afford big boats. In my view, if you have it..then flaunt it. Good luck to those who can afford a Squadron 65 or more (wish I could!!)..My main point was, that when I lost all, the boat was the first on my list of "must have backs".
