I guess that the fact, that like me..you guys log onto the forum..means you're all obsessed with your boats and boating in general (How sad are we really?). But how obsessed are we really? When my business went bust 3 years ago, top of my "must have back" list was a boat..before a decent car, decent income, return of self-esteem..everything. So now I have my boat, albeit "only a twin petrol Sunfury, worth nothing" (as very unkindly described by another forumite), but I'm as happy as Larry with it and all the other things can come second. Am I unsusual? Or do you all agree that our hobby/sport is almost the "be all and end all"

I agree. If I were to find myself in a position where I was struggling to pay my mortgage and keep my boat or if I were to be made redundant then I would certainly put my boat before my house. I would sell my house, put the money in the bank and live on my boat until such time that I could buy another house, if ever. I'd have a complete change of lifestyle.
The way I look at it is you only live once, do what makes you happiest.
If you had struggled all your life to buy that big expensive house and nice car but at the cost of not being able to do what you really wanted would it be any benefit to you once on your death bed? Or would you look back and think "F**k it, wish I'd done that, it would have been fun".
In fact, just saying that you would put your "spiritual wellbeing" first makes you sound like a nice person far more than an obsesive nut and I for one would have a pint or two with you if we were ever to meet.
Well done.

Well now that's bizarre!! I too have had a bust business and my priorities are just yours!!

The question is... do you work to live or live to work. Another question... when you are old and grey, do you say "Well I really enjoyed paying the Halifax all my wages to sit in this large brick palace which is now empty 'cos my family are grown up". Or do you say "I have done all the things in life that I really did want to enjoy, like boating"

BTW - Nowt wrong with a Sunfury. Do you enjoy it?? Of course you do. I run a 1986 Windy 8800 and I love it.

Thanks for the reply..yes I really love my Sunfury..does everything I need it to, is a great sea boat, fabulous accomodation and it got us back in the water!! It's my pride & joy, which is why I got just a little hurt, when on another post a forumite suggested that I had "just a Sunfury..worth nothing".

But there you go again "its only a sunfury, worth nothing" to him perhaps. He's probably struggling to buy this great big gin palace so that he can keep up with the jones's, but is he REALLY happy? Deep down happy? I doubt it. He is to busy hoping he can make the next payment on it.
It's all to do with what other people will think isn't it. Well, bo**ocks to other people if they think my boat is worth nothing and that means I'm not worth talking to then fine, p*ss off and talk to somebody else.
As it says in my profile my hobby is my boat and ANYbody elses, regardless of what it is and what its worth, besides your boats probably worth more than mine ya bastard :)

Listen..I don't really care what mine is worth in £££'s, to me it's worth everything. Nothing beats the pleasure of going down to the marina, taking her off her berth and crusing down the Hamble before opening up the engines in the Solent. Not only that, but this season we have done Weymouth three or four times, Poole too many times to mention, plus loads of local stop overs. Next year she'll be doing an extended trip down to Cornwall..can't wait!!

I step on the boat and time slows down, the worries of work go away. Boating is the freedom of carvaning with the extra technical bit of steering it and having something to fix. The best holiday we had on a boat was our first cruiser - a 10 year old Sealine 190 - so size doesn't matter.

Yep..we've had great holidays on all our boats, starting with 13ft Dory Eurosport, moving on to Glastron 209, Larson 254. Sealine 285, Sealine 290..then bust, now back with Sunfury.

I am obsessed with my boat and all things boaty.

As Joanne often reassures me size just does not matter.... in fact I have some pals with smaller boats than mine and many with hugely larger and far far more expensive ones but really don't see them in terms of money. They are boats albeit quite different and the common bond seems to be the similarly obsessed owners.

The point is that in my experience the boat folk whose company we enjoy do not judge others nor themselves by the size and cost of their boats - they are just people with boats and thats it.

Whilst this may not be a typical reflection of south coast boating it is certainly mine which includes raggies too.

Ah how reassuringly positive....but true in my little world.

Nick

You mention that one of your former boats was a Sealine 285. I'm in the final stages of buying one. Anything peculiar to the 285 that I should look out for?

I agree, i would rather keep my boat and sell my house, I know someone who does not agree with me, and we have fallen out just discussing if it was every to happen. I said sell house keep boat, she said sell boat keep house.

Never mind she will never understand.

Does not matter about size either, I get more fun from my Bayliner 1850 than I do my Sealine F44. F44 great boat and does everything I want but I enjoy the Bayliner 200% more.

Now thats not fair. Although I take the point. Any ones boat sinking is far better than mine. Though anyones boat sinking, upsets me. My problem is. Boat in Plymouth which I love. House, business. Half of friends In Lancashire. I know what I want to choose. But is it wise!!

Not obsession, would you rather be a couch potato football fanantic?
Live your dreams!!!,
This is not a rehearsal, It`s the only chance you get. Did anybody leave you a stack of money? Then go for it, be a pound in debt (at least) when you snuff it!
I live mine and will continue to do so!

I know its a bit morbid but a good test for "I am doing the right thing" is on your death bed will you be saying "I wish I'd spent more time in the office" or "I wish I had got a bigger mortgage" or "I'm glad I bought that boat"

This post is very reasurring!! I have been thinking lately that I have lost a grip on reality!! I havnt even got round to buying any bricks and mortar yet. I have always wanted a boat, but it wasnt until a couple of years ago that it struck me that I could afford to buy a small cruiser, rather than the 35 footers i'd been dreaming of.

So.... some time later and about 25k poorer I have 'just a little Fairline Weekend' probably also worth nothing!!! But it has taken me over. My entire wellbeing and sanity now seem to be linked to the bl**dy boat!!!! I have had fantastic fun in her, and she has provided a superb waterside abode for the weekends. She will be paid for in full very soon, so I'd better start looking for a house as well- but then again a nice 40' liveaboard would be very nice!!!

Yes, you could say i'm obsessed!!!!

Couldn't agree with you more! What better way is there to spend the weekends than on your own floating holiday home, whatever its size.

Phew...it's not just me then!
Had two seasons out of out P32 now and it has been great. I have always loved boats but the good news is that the family are all into it now and it has been good for us. SWMBO doesn't always share my view that our hard earned shouldn't be fritterred away on such things as new furniture for the house when we need new fenders etc but we usually reach a compromise.
We are currently selling the P32 with a view to getting soemthing bigger - a really silly decision when looked at financially but as others have said, this isn't a dress rehearsal.
I really enjoy just being in the marina and chatting with like minded folk but what gets me are the number of expensive boats that seem to sit there and are only visited occaisionally - perhaps we are not all obsessed?
