We are on hard standing in a boat yard and on a metered power outlet. We use the power to heat the boat , unattended, in the winter. The insurance Co. are a little edgey about it and I would like it in writing from them that the boat is covered for fire. Would your insurance Co. be ok with this? Is it a good idea to get it in writing? Nik

If the yard's electricity is properly installed, with the correct protections, and if you have a RCD or similar in the boat, plus an EC approved heating system, again properly installed or approved by a competent lecky, then the insurance co will have to work very hard to say anything against the set up. After all keeping the interior warm and dry is 'best practice' and in the long-term interest of the boat's structure. Possibly an auto fire system, or at least one bottle with an auto release valve; gas, not foam or powder.

However, if they want to wriggle out from being liable, they will do so with gusto after the event, so I reckon it's worth tying them down before anything happens.

Well, if you don't have any confidence that you won't need to claim - I'm not surprised they are jittery. Tell 'em you don't need their poxy cover & save half a year's premiums.

Insurance is another form of gambling, do you have the confidence in your bet?

Only teasing, & a little provocative, but it is one viewpoint.

I don't know about fire, but many insurers won't cover frost damage on poorly winterised boats that rely on electric heating to prevent freezing.

This was covered in the last marina newsletter, stating that they cannot guarantee the leccy supply.

Overwintering ideas are like ********s, everyone has one. My particular one is that good ventilation is better than heat, less chance of condensation building with the temp variations.
