I've been told there's a couple of places in the Lowestoft area that should be able to supply oakum at a reasonable price .
There's a slipway that's been taken over by a trust but I'm not sure of the location or if they sell it .
Does any one know the place to go as I do not to pay over the odds re some of the traditional company's !!.

Ta

Thanks for the info lads,
I'd already seen their price !! but hoped to get it for less still they do say on their web site it's the best available at £129.00 for 20kg then there's the other stuff to get to. I bet I spend £300 or more and that's with out buying the calking tools .Beccles is not to far to go from here so I'll have to get sorted.
I hope to find some good second hand gear at the Norfolk boat jumble this Sunday but last year I didn't see much along the lines of calking irons .
At the mo I'm making a pair of beaching legs because Danbrit tends to lean very hard against the pylons, once they are done and sorted I'll be getting on with it so by next week I'll have arms like Popeye

cheers
Mick

Re: snap

I saw him at the boat jumble on Sunday. I brought one of the posh hammers and two bronze irons and balls of calking.
Your right he is helpful but then my £125.00 worth of business so far, helps !.
He told me he did a full spread for classic boat on calking so I'll have to go have a look in WH smiths.
I'm fitting the beaching legs at the mo, but half way through on the way home the water pump went on my landrover so the job has to wait until I get that fixed.
Next week I'll be there and I cant wait to start improving things on Danbrit.

cheers
Mick

Re: snap

One bale of OAKUM should go a long way. We bought a bale(eight bundles) and only used one and a half bundles caulking the whole hull , 36 ft of it. We sold the rest on easily.

Re: snap

He told me to use normal cotton above the water line, so I shall. I think it will be well worth using oakham at the bows .
I have found there to be a difference of opinion about what to use and I'd thought because of the thickness of Danbrits planking oakham was the stuff !.
I didn't ask and he didn't say should I put it in dry as again I know there are different opinion's .

Cheers
