...Not oik.

A 'ceedingly kind member of this parish has gifted me some h'oak. What is its suitability, good forumeers, for its use on deck, as pads under cleats, for example? Staining? Cleaning? Sea water? Epoxy flowcoating? Treatment?

You will find that it will change it's colour to black quite quickly, plus the acid in the wood has a tendency to destroy some metals, a red wood doesn't have these reactions, it will go silver over time, if not protected. Oak in the cabin is ok though. Jon

Spot on halb
don't use anywhere on deck, been there done that, and have now replaced it all with red woods

My dayboat has a spare tiller that's oak. I rubbed it down to bare wood and Epifaned it about 6 times and it hasn't blackened at all after lying on the cockpit floor for 2/3 seasons. I also made an oak boom crutch with the same finish and that's still as new ... so far.

It is perfectly fine with epoxy. The first sailing boat I built was clinker ply construction, with all the framing in oak, from the laminated keel upwards. Everything was glued with epoxy with no problems whatsoever.
What you mean to say is that sometimes it is fine with epoxy. There are many reports of oak reacting with epoxy and causing failures of the bond. There is some research into it bonding well but this tends to be by the companies producing the epoxy. Of course it depends on construction technique because if you are encapsulating it with epoxy soaked glass fibre then it really doesn't matter.

What I mean to say is that oak is perfectly fine with epoxy. I am talking specifically about SP105, microfibres and quercus robur.
It may be that you are talking about some of the unscientific nonsense written on American forums about quercus alba - I haven't seen anything other than some unsubstantiated stories. If you have any first hand experience of bond failures it would be interesting to hear about them.
