\'O\' rings where?

I need a couple of O rings to replace the snapped and worn ones on my water tanks deck filler caps.

I know not which brand, are they all the same (standard). The ones I have are aluminium with a slot in the top; they have WATER stamped on the top.

??

All help appreciated in locating, on-line preferable for ease.

Cheers.

Re: \'O\' rings where?

try your local hydraulic people or industrial bearing supplier. they'll measure it and if its in stock, it'll be pence. if they havn't got one they may be able to make you one from rubber o seal chord. or cut one down that's the same sectional diameter and make you one.

Re: \'O\' rings where?

You could try an engineering supply company or plumbers supplier. Problem getting such things off the internet is that you probably have to buy 50 or so and you pay a disproportionate amount on P & P!

I recently needed a large circlip for a Lofrans windlass and found I could not buy less than 50 on-line. My local bearing supplier sold me one for 50p.
Come to think of it, you could try them:
Orbic Bearings, Handcroft Road, Croydon.

Re: \'O\' rings where?

I don't think I can use the Crush washer seals as these are one use, I think. These need to seal and reseal every time I fill the tanks. I will try that company above in the morning.

I am surprised nobody sent a link to say plastimo or some such, I don't know, do they not support these things with spares?

I did not measure the filler, but I have the broken seal downstairs, but it is so old I am not sure how much I would trust measurements off it. It has to stay on the shank of the cap and not roll each time you open the tank.

This one snapped after I opened my heads fresh tank after about 8 years of not being used. I was really amazed how clean the 10 ltrs of water in the bottom of the bag for all that time was.

I am now the world expert on cleaning flexi tanks as I spent most of Sunday afternoon on the marina scrubbing and cleaning a 20 odd year old bag. It is so fresh now I have realised how bad the galley tank has become! Puriclean is the yachtsmans friend; and half a bottle of Milton!

Re: \'O\' rings where?

Just use a thick EPDM washer then, they have crush resistance, and will not need an aluminium backing. If it needs to be retained just apply a spot of Sika 291 or similart to the underside to keep it in place. You can purchase small sheets of EPDM in motor factors shops for pence.

Re: \'O\' rings where?

I needed some large ones a few months ago (for the moment I can't remember what for, cos I'm going a bit daft, see?) I went to my local small engineering firm and they had a compartmented box with various sizes and gauges (all big'uns). If ever you need small ones, your local hardware store will have them.

D'you know - I do believe I'm about to finally fall off my perch! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: \'O\' rings where?

I have found the ring to be 40mm inside diam the rubber diam is approx 4mm.

No luck googling. hmm.

Re: \'O\' rings where?

Loctite do an o-ring kit; you get the nitrile cord in different diameters, knife and glue. The adhesive is Loctite 406 instant so you could make up your own from a larger o-ring.

Re: \'O\' rings where?

sounds like what i spent last weekend looking for. but not found yet. well i found a couple that where the right ID but the thickness was 6mm. the water filler cap sat too far proud of the deck. both my water and fuel o ring have perished.

I am not interested in the box as I will throw my 200 (gonna use 2) in my bit box.

It seems if they are measuring o/d we need the 4mm x 45mm rings. Plus you would never need to buy another o ring in your life /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have a paypal account, although, if you wanted the box, for postage costs it may be better to send them to you, as mine can just be thrown in a jiffy bag. It depends if you fancy counting out 200 rings or not.

No offence taken if you do not want to join me with this.

Re: \'O\' rings where?

May be different there Woofy but generally no problem here getting ordinary O'rings in small quantities from the local engineering supplies shoppies. Well has been up until I last got some. Just need the dia and the material diameter or a sample.

Unless it is something special of course eg not a plain O'ring.

If an ordinary o'ring and any probs, let me know and I will try here.

{Edit - from yr last post looks like yer sorted, but if not...}

Re: \'O\' rings where?

Last time I did something similar I ended up buying genuine parts, my water pump seals.

Every place I went just showed disinterest in searching their stock for a few pence. Most is prepackaged and in say motor factors labelled to what it fits and not what it is. Most of the small places have gone.

I actually quite fancy a half kit of the above to carry as spares, I need a few for my hot tub, though they are not desperate, but without them I can't adjust the flow on some of the valves, full on!

I am the first to say try a small outfit and get the parts, but really it is not always that simple. The fuel I would use trying to find one at current costs, it would be cheaper to buy like this.

I reckon I used about £15.00 of petrol trying to source alternative seals for my water pump, I don't want to go through that again.

Re: \'O\' rings where?

I will hold off until after the weekend and try the chandlers by the marina, but if not I will possibly go for this kit.

Where yours for the deck fillers?

Re: \'O\' rings where?

The Orings you need are a standard part for certain oil filters, you can get them at any decent auto factors (take an old one with you and if the person is any good he will recognise it immediately). I once got half a dozen for spares in Plymouth.

Re: \'O\' rings where?

I am not disagreeing, but all the ones I have seen on oil filters are flat. But it does give me an idea as I have to go to Widnes tomorrow and there is a big (proper, messy and filthy type) factors there I can try.

My biggest worry is that the one I have is stretched / snapped and I get one that is slightly wrong. My deck fillers are on the foredeck so most important sea water and dog water / bleach does not get into the tanks!

The other thing that has surprised me tonight is how many different types of rubber these things come in; I have no idea which I need, I guess softer is better as it is hand tighten in the plug.
