I need to replace an O ring seal on my outboard power tilt. The Tohatsu dealers have no UK stock and delivery from Japan is a few months away so I am looking to buy an O ring of the right size and material. It is not a sliding seal just a seal to prevent leakage when operating the manual to power mode screw bypass valve. So its working medium is seawater to the outside and hydraulic fluid to the inside. Most O rings seem to be Nitrile but there is also Viton or Silicone. Which material is most suited to this application?

As mentioned, bring the old O-Ring to Pirtek (or any hyrdaulic place) and they'll pull out a replacement.

I've a box of cheap Aldi ORings, often given to people as a temp fix to keep them going for the day.... Ends up being a permanent fix! (Granted we're not talking hydraulic oil here)

Thanks I have ordered some nitrile ones. I found these hard to measure with a vernier gauge, 9.96mm x 2.45mm as near as I could tell. I was wondering if these were just manufacturing tolerance on 10.0 x 2.5, which I have ordered or whether the nitrile does change a little dimensionally with time. I found spec sheets with all the manufacturing tolerances but it was too complex to quickly get a simple answer from it?

I think you're worrying too much about a few tens of microns. And how accurate is your vernier?
