O/No Numbers

If I am correct, all boats carry an O/No number put in place by the builder / manufacturer. I have often seen them in places that would be all but impossible to put them except during the early build stage. My questions are; is this a unique number as per chassis numbers on a car? Also, is there any coding system that can give infomation such as year of build, weight or anything else, especially with regard to older craft whose builders sadly no longer exist. Hopefully someone out there can throw some light onthis for me!! Many thanks in advance, Scorch.

hi john, you can still get in touch with Wm osborne, in little hampton and if you give them the number that "might" be able to give you more info.

by the way where abouts is yours?.... iv'e had a quick look but haven't found mine.
