Hi All

Bit of a long story but need some advice - so to make it shorts as poss - here are the the highlights or lowlights

Birchwood 25 on a Ford petrol engine (old Cortina pre crossflow)

Idiot here left the raw water cooling off - (I know, I know)
Lots of smoke and a nasty noise
Thought we had escaped, as did the yard, replaced impellor, gaskets, all seemed well but it was hiding from me lol.
Gave to boat yard to do a few jobs ready for our two week holiday next wednesday and for a good check and Service
Result call from boat yard to show me nasty crack across engine block, scored cylinder - I killed her
Result holiday now down the toilet, wife and kids give me looks of hate and it's your fault statements

Anyhow - options

1. try and find replacment petrol engine (the current one has been overhauled at least once in its life and we think is beyond help now)
2. Replace with 2nd hand diesel (what one would you recommend?)
3. Replace with new Diesel (ouch) again what one?
4. Used on Thames non tidal now but want enough power to get into London etc one day
5. Book divorce, sellhouse and go live on a new boat alone :-)
6. Suggestions have been a used BMC 1.5 or perkins 4106 ?
7. Best place to find any suggestions?

Would be really grateful for your advice

I have now luckily last night found a house to rent nr Fowey with its own Quay so we can take the Dinghy and at least be near the water for a weeks hols (saving my depression and the kids hols and SWMBO actually smiled when i found it)

Thanks Guys

G'day Nickcred,

I'm not real keen about petrol on boats, one flash and your ash....

However if you do go for a second hand diesel make sure it has not been out of a boat for more than a month, there are plenty around and some good ones, just try to avoid one that has been standing too long.

Avagoodweekend......

To get down to town without too many issues of 2 knots when punching the tide you want 7 knots or so as a happy max in still water. More will want proportionally more grunt from the engine. To avoid spending more than you need it would be good if the replacement engine can mate to your drive (assuming outdrive of some form)

Contact Mike Bellamy of Lancing Marine who will make all sorts of useful suggestions, full of advice and a thoroughly decent chap.

thanks for the reply - she has an Enfield stern Drive - will give lancing a call - being mechanically inept I need all the help I can get /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

2 pre cross flow blocks advertised here, 225 quid each. Strip off your marinised bits, and put them on this engine. EBay whats left over.....

hi,

your exhaust manifold will fit a crossflow.

the timing cover (if that's where the pump is bolted) will also fit, as will the sump (just in case the clearance is a problem)... the bolt pattern on the bellhousing is also the same, the water pump blanking plate/inlet will fit and .... the engine mounts are identical.

so, the only thing you'll have to change is the throttle linkage and the fuel pipe.

you mey have to check the drive plate coupling, but as i remember that should be the same or you can change the flywheel.

that gives you the cheapest and easiest option.

1600cc engines can be found in ford escort mk2, and mk2&3 cortina's.

if you want to go diesel, i'd look at the ford xld 1600, as fitted to escort and fiesta, but you'll need to do a little work with the pump drive, and if you go the whole hog... you'll need a marinisation kit (lancing)

good luck.

steve.
