heading off there next week. any tips on where's good and where to avoid? our 23 ft beam is a bit of an embarrassment in crowded harbours. to date we have eliminated perros guirec and pontrieux.

Don't write off Pontrieux - there are several big cats there as well as the occasional sablier. It's a delightful little town with a very friendly harbourmaster and if you do go to there don't miss out on the incredible value of the Restaurant de la Vallee just outside the town. It's a truckers cafe but totally different from our own greasy spoons. e.g. Help yourself cold meat and salad, then hot main course (choice of 3) followed by cheese board, then choice of 3 puds, coffee and a whole bottle of wine, in a very pleasant, airy bustling dining room, all for the fixed price of - wait for it - 9.15 euros!!!! Only open weekday lunchtimes.

You could lie along the mid-stream pontoon at Lezardrieux; Treguier is not so good unless you anchor just downstream from the marina; Trebeurden would be excellent for your cat and it is very sheltered (If you are there on a Thursday don't miss the market at Lannion 20 minutes away by bus); L'Aberwrach has plenty of substantial bouys but is often crowded with birds of passage (I recommend the 8 euro (excluding wine) lunch at L'Escale); you could anchor or pick up a buoy in L'Aberbenoit but there's nothing much ashore; L'Aberildut is nice but probably too small for you and there is no room at Le Conquet. The Rade de Brest has many nice sheltered anchorages and of course there is always Cameret which has easy access with a lot to offer.

You should be able to go to Treguier. In 2002 we met someone with a 50 odd foot Moody who had been given a swinging mooring just opposite the main hotel on the Quay. This was arranged by the marina staff.

End July - 1st 3 weeks August is busy everywhere - but not too bad.

I would have thought that 23' beam was pretty restictive anywhere! - in which case, avoid Paimpol - nice place but pretty tight in the harbour.

Saw a couple of wide cats in Perros a couple of weeks ago - I would have thought much wider than the 6m entrance.

Prehaps they were floated over the wall at high tide?

Back to your original question - should be ok at St Quayand Ploughmanach. Have a word with the harbourmaster at Treguier (speaks good english) probably could fit you on one of the hammerhead berths otherwise good anchoring downstream by the chateau.

Should be OK at Pontrieux, the harbourmaster will certainly find room for you so long as you can clear the road bridge just above Lezardrieux (17m headroom).Lezardrieux itself has some mid river pontoon and moorings.

Lovely anchorages at Ils de Batz (just outside Roscoff). L'Aberwach. wild, beautiful to name two more on top of those already mentioned. Going further down the coast it just better and cats abound!

If the big cat was K2 with a big Dog logo (a Dutch boat) we met him in the Canaries the Carib and Azores, nice guy, he is too big for the entrance! he has to wait for a big tide and goes out of the harbour over the wall!!
Guess he has to plan ahead a bit...

i ruled out pontrieux as my mast is 2m more than the bridge clearance and we expect to arrive around hw.
