Now that is what I call a swivel.

Sorry been away.

"Do you know what type / size of vessel this cable is on?"

No i don't but it must have been fairly big, I will try and find out. One of the merchant mariners on here might be able to guess.

I didn't take a picture of the anchor, taller than me. It was L shaped, the shank was parallel sided wider in depth where it joins the base, the base part was rather like a turnip cut length ways tapering to a point, flat on top, the bottom rounded rather more deeply. It appeared to be a single forgery.

It is permanently on display as a sculpture on the south bank of the Thames opposite the entrance to St.Kats by the eateries along from Tower Bridge.

I don’t have one that is that big :). But here is photo of one that is more expensive.

You do know you are starting an anchor thread :).

Yes, but it is slow to take off. That one looks more prone to failure, pins to come undone and crevices to encourage corrosion. Looks like it was assembled from parts to get it together.

I had a swivel of that design on a mooring, although somewhat smaller. Two ground chains were 1 inch chain, one upstream, one down. The 3/4 inch swivel was attached to them by a welded hairpin shackle, with 3/4 inch chain to the buoy. The welded hairpin failed and the boat finished up on the beach. The 'weakest link' in practice.

I always use that type of swivel on my mooring.
The enlarged head of the pin just passes through the round hole in the receptor.
the receptor is then heated and hammered turning the round hole into an oval,
This captures the enlarged head of the pin making a fail safe swivel.

These were the swivels on our moorings along with the ground chain that had served for over 50 years before they were taken up and replaced for the creation of Portland marina and Olympic venue. [WPNSA} Alongside is what they replaced them with!! Solid enough though. Bit of a difference in size.
