Now running on white diesel

Today I added 5L of white to my tank. In a fit of complete stupidity as at the garage I decided to put diesel in the can for the outboard! So I I now have white in the boats tank.

I picked up a new boat in the Solent two weeks ago and brought it back to the East Coast via France. I put 60 litres of white diesel on top of 30 litres of red diesel at Fecamp. I was amazed that I could no longer see where the fuel was in the sight glass that is a bit of clear garden hose in the quarter berth. This has made it really hard to tell how much fuel I have. On my other boat I could easily dip the fuel tank with a broom stick. If there was a major change to the colour of diesel, I would never know how much I had.

Perhaps with all the talk about how long the red dye remains I was quite astounded at how quickly the red diesel became invisible with a good mix of white.

i replaced my sight tube last Friday, the original i fitted 15 yrs ago, was polythene type pipe. the new is nylon & slightly opaque, i can see the fuel level easily. got the pipe from Pirtek on the Wherestead rd

We put a small ball of polystrene (or perhaps it was wood, I can't remember) inthe sight tube of our last boat so that we could easily see the level of white diesel

Sorry to be a bimbo again, but I don't understand the issues re white 'car' diesel vs. red. Can someone explain please?

I assume my engine (volvo 2002, 1986ish) ran on red for years and years, but when I moved to the Crouch I started bringing white diesel in cans from the local petrol station and using that instead of going to the fuel pontoons in Essex or Burnham so I reckon I had flushed all red out by now.

A couple of weeks ago I ran out of diesel while out on the river so went into Essex Marina and filled up, so back to red again.

What difference does it make?

No difference unless going to Belgium where there is a small risk of a fine due to "dyed" fuel

Thanks, I understood that much! But I was referring to these comments:

I topped up with white whilst moored at st Kats for the winter two years ago & had problems, I would put some fuel set or similar in the tank. Bio in white can be quite high I believe.

Where did you get it? Are you risking car-diesel with its bio component?

Interesting subject, I left UK waters (Titchmarsh) in 2001 & have been operating out of Mainland Europe on white diesel, obtained from auto outlets, ever since with no apparent problems. So it would appear that this additive issue is a home grown problem?

??
