Off on Thursday after work for our summer holiday, this time taking the boat up river. Having previously only been as far as Henley I'm looking forward to exploring the stretch of river beyond. Any recomendations for nice pubs/ places to eat with nice moorings near by gratefully received! Unfortunately my forum burgee has gone AWOL and I haven't had a chance to get a new one in time but feel free to come aboard if you see us around, the bar is always open on Oudrageous!
 
The Swan at Pangbourne has a small but safe mooring, just above the lock.

The Beetle and Wedge is well respected, even if the neighbours are a bit rough...

Never stopped upstream, must do so later this year perhaps?

recommend getting as far as the Swan at Staines on Thursday evening (c:

Obviously make sure you stop at the Bounty at Bourne End for a pint and ploughmans on your way up (one of the best pubs in all the land imho), personally I would shoot past the Wasp at Pangbourne and wander around Goring, you won't get to Wolvercote for the Trout but if you get as far as Oxford the Head is a great pub; really just take a Nicholson's guide.

You'll go past my son's school at Shiplake and see where all my money goes, if you see a kid who needs a haircut rowing and looking cool in a pair of Oakley Razors scare him by all means but don't kill him

Thanks, I had a look at the Swan web page, looks like a lovely spot so will check that out. I've heard of the Beetle and Wedge as well, have they got moorings? From what Rob mentioned, sounds worth having a poke around the village as well.
 
just based on our previous holidays up that way, I would recommend:

Sonning - can moor downstream of the bridge on both sides (is a mooring fee if mooring on the left going upstream). Very short walk into the village to the Bull Pub, very nice food and bar.


Pangbourne - quite a few places to moor up at the meadow. Would highly recommend the Cross Keys pub, very good food (superb home made burgers)

I am still amazed we have timed it so you are going up as we go down. Was lunch the other day SO bad!?

Perhaps we'll meet on the way back down/up?

Typical isn't it?!

In case your interested, a couple of boats from our marina are heading off to London, Chatham, Queensborough, Ramsgate and Dover for 2 weeks towards the end of August. They will have a similar cruising speed to you I think...
 
Thanks for all the tips! We are at Bushnells tomorrow night to try and find a nice pub for the game, is there a club house at the marina? Thanks for the Pangbourne recomendations as we plan to spend 2 nights there from Sunday then Leathern Bottle for either lunch or dinner, we were considering both, depending on the weather.

Leathern Bottel !!!! Boaters aren't exactly welcomed with open arms you'd be far better off using the Beetle & Wedge, or, if you don't mind a walk, moor on the field above the lane to South Stoke a go to the Perch & Pike.

We were not exactly welcomed with open arms on the old Birchwood at the Leathern Bottle, curiously every table was booked inside and out, despite there only being 12 people there :-)

Beetle and Wedge does great food, great service and will let you moor outside (last time we used them anyhow) if they have space.

If you want good food in Pangbourne try the Ferryboat on the Whitchurch side, just over the toll bridge, reccomended.
 
Our friends that we are cruising with have been the the Leather Bottle before and were quite impressed with it. We have a mooring there as well, although we need to raft which is no problem, but I think we will stop at the Beetle and Wedge on the way back. At Pangbourne Meadow tonight, lovely spot despite the noise from the mainline trains. I'll have a walk into town tomorrow for a mini pub crawl. Sinning looked lovely, that will also be a stop off point on the way back. The Tesco in Reading is handy, but couldn't wait to get away from there... Byron, where is your place as interested to see whereabout as heard so much about it?
