Ian Wright's post got us all going. Sore welly marks on our legs, frozen bums, medicated bog paper, two-handed Wagon Wheels -- no end of lovely nonsense that brought out the old fart in the best of us. But what will our kids (teenagers, twentysomethings) remember fondly about this day and age? Awful White Boats? Muddy creeks where you could anchor for free? Charts you had to write on? Buttons you had to push with a finger?

What else?

they will look sagely at their grandchildren and say

I remember before Setsailforsun had every boat on the Solent
When boats were made of wood
When pauline B was svelte and beautiful and had all her own teeth
before the thames swamped london village
when man utd were in a premier league side not in beezer homes league
when people found out where they were using a compass and peice of paper called a chart
when most boats had no electric winches or if they did it only pulled the anchor up
oh an anchor was a peice of metal that allowed you to stop the boat in bays and such likem, before oceansealake village took over all water fronts.

oh go on kill me now

Go ahead and play the blues if it'll make you happy.

It was a time when people went sailing because they enjoyed sailing and not because it was a trendy option for filling up one's leisure experience portfolio or a low cost retirement plan.

Pardon? What are you trying to say? we all go sailing because we enjoy it, or why else would we do it. I can think of much cheaper retirement options, but not more enjoyable ones.

I am not questioning why you go sailing today.

I suggest you read the original question again and then my posting might make more sense.

Pugwash was asking us to predict what a future generation might “remember fondly” about sailing today.

Based on trends evident today I think in future more people will sample sailing just as a one-off SunSail vacation or corporate away-day experience. You have probably met the sort who’s life mission is to acquire a range of dinner party calibre experiences.

Re. The retirement plan.

There are some depressing demographic and financial headaches building that will force people to view life afloat as a low cost form of existence. Take a walk along a canal tow path outside a UK city and you will find 21st century shanty towns under development. I am not sure what proportion are opting out in the 60’s sense of the word or who have been dispossessed.
