Northney marina berth holders

Gosport is somewhat underwhelming as far as food and pubs go. Handy for the Solent though. If you donpt mind teh lock the Port Solent might be worth a look too.

I seem to remeber the Indin place being pretty many years ago. Probably long gone now and some 'local'pubs which weren't bad for food.

We looked at Gosport but decided on Northney when we moved. No single factor, but we weren't fans of the Gosport hinterland and I did grow up sailing in Chi so have a certain affection for the area. I do wonder if the best option in the medium term, if an active social scene is of the essence, is to look to join one of the clubs in the Solent with its own moorings, Royal Southern on the Hamble springs to mind.

Bump - how did it go for the OP I wonder?
Thanks for asking ☺️ The OP left Plymouth yesterday and is currently in Brixham checking tidal flow, again, and tide times, again, for the next leg to Portland. Unfortunately the good times for moving are all on springs. We'll be here until sometime around the 18th of September and then move when the wind is favourable. After Portland we'll have a week in Gosport then finish the year (end March 2021) in Northney. We'll have decided by then whether to stay there or go back to Gosport. Or, who knows, if our house sells we might just move on as the fancy takes us.

One tip, head for Weymouth and arrange with Andy at Quayside fuels for a fill up.

Thank you. We used 90 litres for 50 miles from Plymouth, we did a few detours into the coastline on the way. We'll top up before leaving Brixham and will have 600 litres in the tanks so barring a catastrophe should be good to the end.

I was in Gosport for many years some time ago, and for some years now I have been in Haslar. In my view, Haslar is far superior for a variety of reasons, not least the way the Ebb whistles through many of the berths at Gosport, and the vastly more friendly staff. However, being a raggie, fuel cost is not a consideration for me, but I understand the place in Cowes is reasonable.

Wherever you decide on, do try the New Bengal in Stokes Road. Assuming you like Indian food, it is superb.

Surely no trip to Gopsort is complete without a trip to the Castle Tavern :)

In this time of distancing don’t forget that take always are available on site pretty much from Hardy’s. If fine dining is your thing Gosport doesn’t have a lot to offer but there is the chance to catch the green Gosport ferry to Gunwharf for a greater choice. The good thing is both Asda and Morrison’s are in walking distance of Haslar and if you fancy more peaceful shopping there a lovely if somewhat small Waitrose in Alverstoke. For cheaper fare Aldi is close walk from the Castle Tavern. The place I would add is the Thai restaurant in Stokes road which is quite reasonable if you fancy a Thai of course.

Our plans have changed again. We were sitting in Brixham watching the weather and realised that this Tuesday and Wednesday would be the best for a while.

So at 6ish on Tuesday we left Brixham for Portland marina. The first of my bogeymen, crossing Lyme Bay went without a hitch. We laughed in the face of Portland Bill.

This morning we set off for Haslar. The sea was lumpier than forecast but we passed through the needles channel (my 2nd bogeyman) without a hitch. Progress as far as Cowes was slow as the tide messed us about and the whole trip took over 9 hours.

We're now in a Haslar berth. We planned to stay a week to explore this side but the boat is really rocky, could it be when the big ferries pass?

We don't know how long to stay but we don't have to pay anything until we leave. I'm so relieved we decided to move this week and not hang around in Brixham
