Hi

Since I last wrote to this forum Northfleet Harbour Restoration Trust has come very far as an organisation and also as a project, we have initiated a full community based archaeological dig in the ancient harbour, we have moved hundred of tons of mud and rubble exposing two old docks and a 200 year old slipway with ancient public rights, we have cleared over half a mile of harbour wall so we can now see the full extent of the harbours size and potential. We are also exposing an Elizabethan beach and a tidal mill the site of which date back to be domesday book.

We now have a small waiting list of historic ships waiting to use Northfleet for restoration and have the harbour as a base for their operation.

Whilst we are going full pelt with the archaeology we do have one eye on the future and are now actively raising funds and getting quotes for a feasibility study, if anyone would like to help us provide this much needed community asset please get in touch or send a cheque payable to Northfleet Harbour Restoration Trust co NHRT, 80 Dover Road, Northfleet, Kent DA11 9QD or use the paypal donate button on our website.

The following links give an idea of some of our activities, progress to date, achievements, aims and objectives www.northfleetharbour.org.uk and https://www.facebook.com/NorthfleetHarbour.

Thanks for taking the time to read these, please do visit our website and Facebook site to get a real idea what we will be offering back to the Thames boating community.

Good luck with the project.

Your Facebook site is useless for those of us who don't want to be on Facebook. You're restricting your audience.

Ken, fair point about non Facebook users, however we do duplicate all the info on our website http://www.northfleetharbour.org.uk/blog.html as well as putting information on YouTube.

We do have a problem with getting information to non PC users and have had to rely on the local media picking up on our press releases, we did manage to get some TV coverage as well which did help.

A very interesting project. One suggestion if I may; could you put a clear location map on the site? It took me a while working through Google Earth to work out exactly where the harbour is.

Does London really not have a marina? I'm surprised there are no commercial ventures to establish one.. There must be a demand from both city boys and travelling yachties.

From the website:

Northfleet Harbour is situated a few miles up
stream of Gravesend just before Swanscombe
Peninsular at 51.450423,0.327787
From the river it is SW of the Tilbury Docks
entrance on the South of the river.
From the land it is in Northfleet at the bottom of
College Road parallel with The Creek. From the
train it is 5 mins walk from Ebbsfleet International.

Then if you put the lat and long , 51.450423,0.327787, into Google Earth, or "The Creek, Northfleet" or "College Road, Northfleet" into Google Maps or Google Earth you are there.

But yes a map showing the location would be a sensible addition to the website.

Limehouse and St Catherines (or is it St Katherines?). Plus I think there's one in the old Surrey Docks. There's also one at Chiswick, but you have to be sans mast to get that far upstream.

Good idea with the map, I'll have words.

There are marina's in London but nothing downstream to the estuary other than some swinging moorings.
