As per my previous posting about insurance for the Red Sea I have been sent a quote from Northernreef Insurance by the broker, Edward William Marine Services. A google search has produced good and bad feedback, including this thread posted some time ago on YBW. Northernreef Insurance.

Does anyone have any more recent experience with this insurer?

I can ONLY comment on Third Party and service, not claims.

I was with them 2006/7 with single hander third party cover for European and Mediterranean waters out to the Black Sea. I decided not to come home but go to the Caribbean after returning from Greece. 'Phoned them and they simply added to my area of cover and told me that when the policy expired in a few months there might be a slight increase for renewal in view of the increased area of cover. Papers were waiting for me on arrival in the Canary Islands. Excellent service and they even understand that people actually sail ...at night..alone /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

From what I've read about claims on their policies, the expression blood and stone come to mind along with the use of a bargepole.

You pays your money.....

I wrote to the South African 'Coampanies and Intellectual Property Registration Office'

They said that there was no company registered under the name of Northernreef Insurance SA.

Perhaps the company could rebut this.

Not sure why you should enquire in South Africa as the firm is registered in Uraguay and operates from Spain. (SA does not indicate South Africa, but is the abbreviation for the Spanish equivalent of Limited Company).

Follwing this thread with interest and the links within them I was surpised to find one of them saying Cannot Proceed Access Denied, Is there anything wrong or ominous about this,

I kept a copy of the blocked thread (it was obviously going to cause trouble) which contained accusations that the insurer had declined to pay following a constructive total loss, when the yacht sank at anchor.

I believe there is a tiny subclause in their policy requiring yachts at anchor to have someone aboard at all times. (Of course, in practice often the entire crew go ashore when blue-water cruising). Northernreef offers lower than average quotes, they seem to cover almost any risk, they will insure without asking for a survey; so one must perhaps expect that they will stick to the exact letter of their small-print when claims arise.

We are in our third year with Northern Reef and made a claim (our first ever) earlier this year. Had no problems whatsoever with the claim which was handled by an external loss adjuster. Full amount of claim has been paid out based on invoices. This was for damage when forestay (only 3 years old) broke and included replacement forestay (shipped from UK), welding on mast and genoa repairs (in Japan) and replacement furler foils (from Brazil). Due to the remote location where it occurred and the long time to get everything sorted (it happened 1000 miles south of Japan in Micronesia en-route to Japan from Papua New Guinea) it was several months before we could complete repairs (spent a long time heading north under jury forestay). We got the initial approval to complete repairs and order the parts very quickly via e-mail. The final claim was approved in 2 or 3 weeks after we provided all invoices and receipts and the full amount (less excess) was paid out 2 weeks later. No assessor visited the boat and we can't fault the service which was completely via e-mail.

I have been insured through Edward Marine Insurance for the last year as they seem to be the only people who will insure my wooden ex-naval tender without a survey. However, I am unsure as to whether they would ever pay out and the premium I have to pay to re-new I cannot afford at present so I am in a condary.

They appear to have been professional throughout arranging the policy but I am concerned as not sure what legal protection I have with them being based in Spain.

Anyone any further experiences I'd be happy to hear them, or if anyone knows anyone else who will insure without a survey that would be helpful!!

Hi There,
I filed a claim with northernreef after being dismasted in the pacific a year ago. So far I have not received a bean and they have offered less than half of the already heavily discounted claim amount in an apparently arbitrary decision. I am fighting on for my entitlement under the policy.
Any advice or information that might be useful would be greatly appreciated.
I am convinced that they are a pack of thieves, but am determined to take them to task.
At the very least I will endeavour to let every cruising yachtsman know of my experience.
The only true measure of an insurance company is what happens when a claim is lodged.
I suspect that they will pay for small claims in order to maintain some sort of credibility, but most of us carry insurance for when the big stuff happens.
I am currently building a web page laying out my total experience with them along with all correspondence, and will advise of url when complete
Regards,
Simon Hamer

Northernreef Insurance Co.Sa

From the posts no the internet I see several people are having problems with claims against Northernreef Inst Co
I also am having a problem with them.
One example of the reasons they have given not to pay is
My power assisted steering is not working correctly when the engine is not running.
Therefore my boat is not seaworthy
The costs my solicitor has indicated I may have to pay are beyond my ability to cover. He suggested that if all who have a case against them should get together and fight as a grope

NOrthenr reef a scam company

This is an old thread. But I came accross this thread through ybw while loking for info on Northernreef myself. I've had the insurance for three years. THEY RENEGED ON AN INSURANCE CLIM for no valid reason. I am in process of seeking redress of this situation in the legal system. Our research reveals this company to be most probably a sham insurance company. If this turn out to be so it will be a very difficult road to hoe for me. If any one has any information on the terrible insurance company please contact me. through this thread.

I used to be a Northern Reef customer - simply because my broker retired and his successor (Edward William Insurance) transferred all the then current customers onto NR policies. I thought little of it at the time, but later on after a bit of research I decided it would be a very wise thing to change to a UK based company with a bit of a solid reputation that I had actually heard of. Judging from this, and other, threads it was a good decision.
I can recommend Saga, but that is just a purely personal opinion, and there are plenty of other similarly good, and maybe better, companies out there.

(ps not sure I'm really allowed in here, as I'm not a liveaboard, even though I own a Corribee, which as everyone knows is more than up to the task....)

Northernreef Insurance is bogus

Thanks for the reply. I will look into your suggestions into replacement marine insurance as soon as the repairs are completed. Of course I will bear the expense for now but hopefully we will get reimbursement from NR through litigation.
