Northern light dues?

Would be awfy sad if leisure marine users in the south were to determine whether a light dues tax was levied …. in approx 160nm sailing in NW Scotland (roughly Oban to Gigha and back via circuitous route including many boozers) I reckon we benefited from four (non-harbour) navigation marks:

Fladda Lighthouse
Ardluing starboard cone (off Luing)
Sgeir Nuadh port can (off Gigha)
Ruadh Sgeir (Sound of Jura)

This isn’t being selective. There weren’t any others, at least none that I could see …

The number of rocks just awash, with no more than a break in the wave pattern showing their presence, and without navigation lights/marks must be in the hundreds. I wouldn’t like to go anywhere in either bad visibility or at night ….. but there again leisure marine activity is something one should enjoy.

By comparison, the Solent is very well marked and one assumes that experience has shown that such is needed but if you think of how many end up on Brambles Bank which is so very well marked you do wonder ………

Southern light dues?

Yes, we may have loads of buoys and lights in the South, but the great majority of Trinity House buoys are laid purely for the convenience of deep draft ships and have little relevance to us. Many of the most useful buoys in areas like the Solent are sponsored racing marks, or laid by harbour authorities or local clubs. If we pared down to what it is that Trinity House provides that is really invaluable to us --- more but maybe not that much more than in Scotland.
 
I agree with you.

Get rid of all bouys and lighthouses, not needed with todays toys. If the toys fail then revert to paper and depth sounders.

who needs East Borough Head, Street, Boulder, Piller to give examples in just a small area off the South Coast. Always makes me smile to see people struggle to pass through the gap when there is meters of depth either side when taking the Loo passage along the coast.

I agree too. I think the Solent has far too many buoys and blame that for nearly running on Bramble Bank last year because they can be disorientating as well as useful if that makes any sense.

What's wrong with a few clearing bearings in good visibility? Part of the enjoyment in sailing surely is the navigational aspect with buoy hopping or computerised position monitoring removing the challenge!

You are absolutely right. It can get a bit 'tense' to say the least in poor vis - but there are only a few examples that I can think of that would be a welcome sight when they come into view as expected.

'Navigation' marks are the correct term for NLB light - the rest of the time is pure pilotage - which is either dead easy to some people - or learned the hard way.

sailing from belfast up to scotland most years there really aren't many marks provided by trinity house but the ones provided y the harbours are only on their harbours. So we probably use these few marks more often but then if you put a mark on every danger for all vessels in the west coast you would have a forest of red,green, black,red,whiteand yellow poles. i suppose it works out less marks, less boats same fee.

Being a sad old git I sometimes like to play with my hard earned toys. But if I cannot work out how to use them ( I still still have trouble with these dammed plastic mobile thingys) then I revert to paper, running fixes, cocked hats et all

How come you didn't notice Skervuile, 3m or so NE of Craighouse and quite the most conspic. manmade object in the Sound of Jura?

I think Para was off watch at the time of passing, catching up on some zzzzzzz's. Some of us had a very early start on Sunday - Jimi will have seen it as he started considerably later due to being asleep at the appointed early start hour

No Elder Brethern and arcane stuff like that up here. Our Commissioners of the Northern Lights were obviously thinking big. As JM Barrie put it, "There are few more impressive sights in the World than a Scotsman on the make."
