Second vote for using Welsh Highland railway, if climbing Snowdon (Train stops at foot of Snowdon Ranger path) is a bit too much, stop at Beddgelert, wander around the town (good fish & chips) & then walk down the Aber Glaslyn - beautiful river walk, also call at Croesor (it means welcome) wher you can see the Ospreys nesting.
Portmadog is a lovely harbour & Shell Island (if you can dry out) is a lovely spot - but beware of tides in & out of the tiny entrance, you will HAVE to go with the flow!
