North Foreland to Burnham on Crouch

Been to Burnham from the North but never from north Kent. What is the preferred route?

Depends on which bit of north kent. From Mudway/Swale pretty straightforward - Maplin Edge and turn lft at Crouch entrance.

how much do you draw?

The shortest route is north side of Margate sands, South Edinburgh, across the Barrow, across the end of Foulness..

Leave N Forland on a rising tide and aim to be on Foulness by an hour before HW... in a SW is is a beam reach all the way.. If you are doing it at lowish water vyiu have to weave about the ends of the sandbanks and go through the Barrow Swatchway properly..

Agree, indeed that was my first crossing.. much easier navigation.. however sunk to Whittaker can be a slog if there is too much W in the air... and if wind over tide it is particularly lumpy..

Also there appears to be a large lump of sand on the NE side of the Sunk just next to whe the old SW sunk beacon used to be..

2. Agree - but there's room betwixt the SW and Middle Sunk.

I am surprised that after the Barrow Swatchway you didn't suggest the half tide crossing of the Maplins so popular in the 1920's!

I learned the Barrow Swatchway route from a chap who learned his navigation from a chap called Brain Foulger...
