Norfolk Broads

Hi All,

I was hoping for some advice regarding the Norfolk Broads... I once delivered a boat from the Solent to Ely and thought it was a beautiful area; I've just not been back since!

I will be going to stay in a caravan for a week with the family and will be desperate to go out for a trip on the water! Can anyone recommend a place to rent boats, or perhaps might have a boat available for a day or two early next week? We will be staying at Clippesby (east of Norwich).

I have litterally just got back from a weekend on the Broads in a hire boat. It was great, in spite of the weather. It looks like you are not far from Potter Heigham, so you could hire from Herbert Woods. In Wroxham, dayboats were just under £100 per day, and I doubt they would be much different in PH. From PH, you can go down the Thurne, and up the Ant to Barton Broad - plenty to explore up there, or you could go under PH bridge, and explore that side. I've never been that way - the boats I have hired have always been too big. You'll understand when you see the bridge. There are places you can hire sailing boats, but you would have to do a bit of internet searching.

+1 for Martham. If you hire from them, go and have a look at Hickling Broad. Not far upstream from Martham. You can take there 1/2 deckers through PH bridge iirc which is fun!!

We have sailed trad gaff rig Broads boats from there many times and an excellent yard. Sadly Tim passed away a few years ago, but I believe his wife is still running the business.

I was also going to suggest NBYC at Horning, where we hired boats some 10 years ago or so, but looking at the website, not sure if its still extant. Anybody know? Alongside the Broads yachts they had a superb Wherry Yacht, White Moth I recall, I think for crewed hire.

I would echo comments re the Hunters Yard boats, but without engines and if you have no familiarity with a quant pole, not for the faint -hearted, esp in May Bank week!!

If you went to Ely from the Solent, you didn't go on the Broads, except as a detour (like Dylan!). One of the oddities of the inland waterways is that there is no connection between the Broads and the Fenland Rivers.

I've sailed a half-decker from Martham. I am a great admirer of those who sail on the Broads; it is a completely different world to sailing at sea! Tacking in a river of dyke not much wider than the length of the boat is great fun - it's a good job there are reed beds to act as fenders!
