Usual way is to use your usual varnish and then sprinkle silver sand on it when wet and the brush off surplus when dry - works well.

You can get non slip granules which can be added to either paint or varnish from International Paint. Must be well mixed in but is easy to use.

Where do you want the non slip? If is a small area like companionway steps I have used 3M Safety Walk non-slip strips 25mm wide. This is like 100 grit sandpaper with very powerful self adhesive backing. It looks well and the grip is excellent. It costs about £20 for an 18m roll.

Hi Dave -- Do you mean "non slip " or matt ?? cos as you no doubt know Varnish being a clear lacquer is designed to enhance the wood. If "solid "particles are added to it ain't going to do the job its intended and it will look crap.
Sorry ! (if you intend to use epoxy varnish if you PM me I'll explain a little "trick of the trade" to get a good non-slip result . Will be a waste of time posting here if you arn't going to use epoxy)
