This just happened yesterday and is still happening currently.

When I replied to a few e-mails in Outlook Express, none of the replies can be sent. I get an error message;

"The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail was e.g. joebloggs@bloggs.com. Subject XXXXXX A/c gpo.iol.ie. Server mail.iol.ie Protocol SMTP. Server response "550 relaying to <joebloggs@bloggs.com> prohibited by administrator "Port 25 secure (SSL) No, server error 550. Error number Ox800CCC79

The error number is the same for all the e-mails that have all been blocked and not sent.

Any computer whizz on the forum got any idea? (I'm computer illiterate)

check and see whether or not your ISP requires authentication for sending email. If they do, go to Tools>Accounts. Click on Properties for the broadband or dial up account you are using. On the Server tab, you'll see a box saying "My server requires authentication". Check that and then try sending mail.

In the same window, check that your SMTP server is correct. If not, Tools, Accounts. Highlight the email account you use for sending and select Properties, Connections.

You can then change your STMP server setting (including your username and password)

Is it one particular person that you're having this trouble with?

If yes, they may have a full mail box, although the bounce message would tell you that, they may have blocked messages from people not in their address list, or some sort of anti-spam may have blocked you on the basis of a word or phrase in the subject line of your email.

Ticked the box and checked that SMTP server is correct. Did another virus check, just to be on the safe side.

It still won't send e-mails.

One other thought. Can you send emails directly (ie not as replies) Does it happen to every single email you try to send???

OK, This problem is caused when 1) SMTP is incorrectly set, 2) one of the email addresses is incorrect that you are sending to or 3)DNS lookup is incorrect

You've pretty much ruled out 2, cos it happens to every email. So, chances are it's 1) caused probably by corruption of Outlook Express (I presume you haven't changed anything yesterday). So check all the SMTP settings, including username and password.If corrupted, you might need to install it again.

or it's 3) in which case the problem is with your ISP. I'd suggest you give their help desk a call as a first option

I've just sent an e-mail on another computer I have in the office here, so it doesn't seem to be a problem with the ISP.

What does DNS lookup mean?

Are you using an Ireland on-line account to connect to the Internet as the message indicates the SMTP server thinks not. You can check OE settings by clicking the help tab on http://home.iol.ie/. 'How do I set up my email in Microsoft Outlook Express?' is the first option.

It does mention that if you are using Oceanfree.net to connect to the internet
you should replace the mail servers in the answer above with the following:
Incoming POP3: mail.oceanfree.net
Outgoing SMTP: smtp.oceanfree.net

OK, if you sent an email from exactly the same email account as on the computer with problems, then by a process of elimination, the problem must be with the settting in Outlook Express.

Go through them thoroughly, looking for mis spellings etc

DNS is a sort of postcode for the internet - bit techie

One way would be to check the account settings against the settings on the computer that works and see if there are any differences, worst case could be OE is corrupted and will need to be re-installed.

Just finished doing that. Eveything is the same setting. So my e-mail programme looks like it's corrupted and will have to be deleted along with all my e-mails? I'd like to know how it got corrupted in the first place: I've been 10 years on line and never ever had a problem till now.

P.S. Thanks to everyone who has offered help. My mind is addled now and I'm leaving the computer as I've an early start in the morning.

It does sound like corruption of some sort. Why these things happen is down to a myriad of reasons, some simple like a hard drive becoming damaged (not physical damage, but just one little bit of it not reading and writing correctly, and a couple of bytes being out of order)

However re-installing OE is not a trivial exercise (as you'll learn) so before you try that, please do call your ISP, they may be able to talk you through some checks.

My suggestion, assuming that nothing has been changed since it worked would be to take a careful look at a few things:

A dialer virus has been floating around recently which changes your dialup number. Check in your dialup settings that you are using the correct number.

Some freebies such as search toolbars attach themselves into internet explorer and outlook express causing problems.

If you have a virus scanner such as Norton anti-virus, it will intercept your outgoing mail to scan it before forwarding it on. Unlikely to cause a problem but worth checking.

If you are running XP it might be possible to repair the installation rather than deleting it and loosing all your e-mails. If you go to microsoft support site it will tell you how to do this.
Also you should be able to export all your e-mails and address book to a file then import them again after re-installing OE
