Good point. If on XP then roll back to Monday or previous checkpoint. That *may* restore OE to usable state

Do me a favour?

When you get it sorted tell me what you did as I am having exactly the identical issue myself.

Last week my broadband stopped - Bt arrived and changed the box which had shorted out then ok we can surf and read mail but cannot send e mail as before.

Now resorted to sending mail on a web based site...........bloody technology!

I get the same problem occasionally. I then restart the system and it all works ok after that.

Google "error" and the error "number" to get fixes for most computer problems.

Try system restore if you have XP installed this sorts out most of the problems without having to fiddle about too much. Just restore back to a day /system snapshot when the email was working this may do it.

Although saved files will not be changed by restoring to an earlier time it is possible that some programs that have been installed since the restore point being used may go. When Ive called my ISP they have always said try restore befoe anything else- and then charge me 50p a min for the privelage.

It might simply be that your "logon" to your ISP has timed out. Many ISPs expect you to send email within a short time (say, 10 minutes) of receiving email. When you receive emails you use the POP3 protocol which requires authentication, when you later send email they use the same authentication to prove you're a genuine customer. If you take a long time writing the email then it's quite likely that your ISP has timed out your authorisation.

To check this, if it happens again, save the email as a draft, connect to your ISP and receive emails (to refresh your authorisation) and try sending the email again. This problem has happened to me before with my ISP (CIX) and authorisation timeout has been the problem.

Ooh nasty. Your first port of call ( no pun intended ), should be your service provider. They usually have a web link to show what the Outlook settings should be. If so follow them EXACTLY. If not get on the blower to them. They should be able to test whether your attempts at sending mail are getting through to the server. The error message indicates that the problem is in one of 3 areas.
1. There's something wrong with the security of the log in. You log in when you try to send mail. Part of the log in process is authentication set up between you and your service provider. The error message means that this could be failing.
2. Your service provider hsa accidentally put a block on your mail service. SMTP mail uses port 25 fof IP services for outgoing mail and you might be getting accidentally filtered out.
3. Outlook Express is corrupt. Let's hope its not this. It doesn't come as a separate bundle with Microsoft and is usually installed as part of the operating system. There are various ways of reinstalling it, perhaps the easiest is to run reinstallation of your operating system, using the repair option, and see if it does a repair of the Outlook files. Another way is to install the latest Service pack available from Microsoft for Internet Explorer. Part of this is the latest Outlook Express version. If you already have it, then you can't install it and you have to frig registry to fool the installer into thinking you havean older version of IE. I'd personally avoid this unless you're desparate. Hope this hasn't confused you and first of all contact your ISP either by web or blower.

small file and works fine for me

the home page has some neat freeware related to mailing including OE restore programs etc

please don't expect me to be able to support any installations - I am only a guy who used it out of desperation (and avoiding paying 1.50 a month for access to a BT SMTP server!)

PROBLEM SOLVED !

So simple. My son had been using the computer and had changed the default connection phone number to another one. I could still download my e-mail but the other number couldn't upload my outgoing e-mails.

I've smacked myself over the head BUT that's nothing compared to the smacking he's going to get over his head when he comes home.

Can I say, "thank you very very much" to everyone who replied really trying to help me overcome the problem.

"Thanks again to everyone of you."
