I have a raymarine DSC radio with an internal speaker and an external speaker in the cockpit.
Is there a way of muting the set speaker when I switch to the external speaker.
The set speaker very loud down below to get a decent level out of the external speaker.
I would prefer it if I could turn the set speaker off all together, especially when we are sailing through the night so people could get a better sleep.
Thanks for any replies

I have the opposite problem, plugging the external speaker into my XM set cuts out the set speaker which I'd like left on as it's a pain pluging in & out whenever going in & out of the cockpit !

If you open up the radio the speaker should be pretty obvious round with 2 wires to it. If you cut one of the wires that should silence the little b... You can bring the 2 ends out through a hole in the back of the radio to a switch or even a variable resistor or fixed resistors. About 10 or 20 ohms should make a difference to sound level. This should not affect the external speaker output at a jack.
good luck olewill

Thanks.. I just dont understand why there isn't something in the menu or on the radio to swtich from internal to external.

Cos Raymarine aren't very good at radios :)

My Standard Horizon has a volume control on the panel at the chart table, a separate volume control for the remote handset in the cockpit, and if we fitted a standalone speaker then that could have its own knob as well.

I want my own knob as well.

It is the built in speaker in the radio and an aux speaker in the cockpit I am having troubles with.

Yeah, but the problem presumably is that when you turn down the volume knob on the radio itself, it also turns down the cockpit speaker?

On my system, the knob on the radio only turns down the speaker built into the radio. You can fit a "dumb" external speaker, but the recommended one has its own volume knob and is not affected by what you do on the radio front panel.

I quite often have the cabin panel turned right down to barely audible, but the cockpit remote up high enough to hear over the wind or the engine.

You are right. I turn down the main radio and the external speaker also turns down. As the external speaker is quieter I cannot hear it.
It seems the best solution is to take the internal speaker wires, and extend them via a on off switch.
