Any ideas on this one?
After starting the engine there is a noticeable clanking noise coming from the sterndrive.
Whilst still tied up I ran the engine until warm and then put her in forward gear and then neutral and the noise went away.
Before this a few weeks ago after a 120 mile round trip up river i did notice a slight noise from the drive which disappeared momentarily if i trimmed the drive up or down, but it soon came back. Not very loud but you do get know your own normal engine tones.
I recorded the noise and played back to the engineer that did the service and gimbal bearing. He said the gimbal may need some grease via the legs grease nipple.
Unfortunately I will have to pay to lift the boat to do it or find somewhere shallow enough in the Thames.
Forgot to say, its a Bravo3 leg

you can pump grease into a B3 (tit is on the starboard side of the housing) whilst in the water reasonably easily; however best is to get 10 people on the bow first...

get a big gun, pump excess to the tip, locate tit and, keeping gun out of water, pump...

that said, if the noise you are hearing is at planning speeds I concur - at low speed I favour U-J's. Depending on the year it may have sealed bearings here (or not)

On balance I would suggest a proper service...

Cheers Duncan
I was shown where the grease nipple is but with a 2' bathing platform overhang its a bit out of arms reach.
The noise is at low river speeds and have not taken her on the plain. Its a 2005 boat with full service history from new. I also had the same done including new bearing and all the bellows/gators changed. Or thats what i paid to be done:confused:

Could be 3 things, gimball bearing, uj, or flywheel coupling breaking up, ither way get out out of the water and dnt run it anymore than you have to, if the uj explodes into pieces you could end up buying at lot more than just a simple repair.

Thanks Paul
Gimbal was meant to have been changed Easter time so must be one of the other two problems. The noise did not come back after putting it back into neutral but haven't tried it again since then.
Any idea of total cost to supply and replace the U'J and coupling?
