I haven't a clue what it should be called but I am looking for a spray which can be used to spray on a bulkhead to reduce engine noise.
Although its not for a boat I hope some of you knowledgable boaty folk can help.
thanks for your help
Derek

I am afraid there is no such product. There are only three ways of reducing sound transmission through a bulkhead. Firstly make sure there are no gaps or holes in the bulkhead. Secondly make the bulkhead heavy. Thirdly, make the bulkhead of several layers of heavy material, ensuring that each layer is free to move independently of the others.

It is this last method that is the basis of all sound absorber materials that can be stuck to bulkheads. They consist of a layer of lead sheet (or at least a very dense and flexible heavy plastic material) sandwichid between a thick layer of foam on the side that is stuck to the bulkhead and a thinner layer of foam faced with a durable surface. Sorry, but you cannot get this stuff from a spray can.

the auto sound deadening spray works by increasing the weight of the steel panel you spray it on and stopping that panel vibrating. It also seals small holes in the panel. Unless your bulkhead is thin metal or ply or has lots of small holes, the spray won't make much of a difference.

The cheapest method is sticking bitumen tiles on, if this is feasable. And indeed, filling tiny holes or cracks helps a lot.

Aaaah... and you can wait till THIS comes along... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
