No tilt on my Honda 2.3 hp outboard motor

Was something done to the outboard to prevent tilt to protect the motor when shipped to my Honda dealer?

The tilt on my Honda BF2.3 is a simple mechanism where the leg is held vertically by a large clip - think plumbing pipe held to the wall by a white plastic clip. It can be quite stiff to ‘pull out’ before it swings freely.

I’m not sure what you’ve tried, whether it has been mounted on a bracket/inflatable dinghy.

I had a quick look at the manual before I came out. It implies that you should be able to simply tilt it, the catch engaging automatically when tilted.
If that is so perhaps the tilt is excessively stiff. Slackening of a little may be all that is required, but because the engine is new speak to your dealer.

I think mine wont tilt if running reversed. Never tested it though

May I, cautiously, suggest you rotate it 180 degrees. I fell for that issue yesterday!!

you cant tilt it unless its pointing forwards (the clip holds it in place when spun round and trying to reverse)

As above; a plastic clip that holds the leg down enough to stop it flapping around and then it has to be pointing forward to tilt it up. It locks down when you rotate 180 so that the thrust doesn't whizz the prop up into the air. The plastic clip can be tight when new and a bit of force needed until it loosens.

It wont rotate either. It's stuck in the same orientation that it was sent to the dealer in.

Called the dealer this morning and they think something is wrong. I'm bring it in tomorrow so they can have a looksee. I guess this is why you buy Honda stuff through a dealer

Have you tried to tilt when it’s not actually mounted on a boat or similar ? Not easy otherwise

All of these, won't tilt unless in line forward, tilt can have a little plastic clip restraining tilting, the tilt can be stiff and the tilt mechanism difficult to find as its hidden undedneath the engine and you need to be a contortionist to access or disengage.

But the obvious was not this forum - ask the dealer

The catch to hold the engine in the tilted position can easily seize up. I had to spend half an hour with penetrating oil to get mine to work properly.

On that catch to hold the engine in tilt, there is a roll pin to keep it in place. I had it on mine that the roll pin hadn't been tapped or pushed far enough through and it would snag when you tried to use the catch. Squeezed it through so that it was midway with a pair of pliers and all good. Took a minute or two to suss the problem.
